Of course, your girl has been exploring the Christmas sales. I recently posted a few of my finds from Zoella Beauty and KIKO too if you’re interested! I haven’t been looking in The Body Shop that much actually, I used to love their products and somehow I just forgot about them. I went in for a snoop around when I went to Bath (here’s my post on that too) and I was pleasantly surprised. I’ve always loved how great their products are and where they stand on animal testing (here’s their page on being cruelty free). They have SO many products and there’s absolutely loads of different scents too. They now sell cosmetics and skincare as well as bath and shower goodies. I have heard amazing things about their makeup so I may have to test these out for myself! Let’s take a look at what I did pick up from their Christmas sale.
No, I didn’t go crazy, but I did get some amazing goodies and they were on sale so it would’ve been rude to walk away empty handed! Can we talk about these scents too? Frosted Berries is my kind of scent for Christmas. I absolutely love anything that smells fruity or like berries so this was an immediate yes from me. I’ve never known anything to be Vanilla Chai scented before so I was definitely curious about this one. It smells HEAVENLY. Even if you aren’t going to buy this, please just go and give it a sniff because my GOD it’s just too good!
Okay so this was ยฃ2.50. WHAT?! Yep that’s right, it really was that cheap. The Frosted Berries Shower Gel comes in a 250ml plastic bottle and has a gorgeous little wreath design on it too (festive points are to be given for this, it’s so cute). This shower gel smells absolutely unreal. It’s fragranced with Red Berries, Vanilla and Cranberry so it’s super rich and fresh smelling. I love how it leaves my skin feeling soft and smelling amazing for hours. You can get it here!
Of course, I couldn’t resist getting my hands on the Frosted Berries Hand Creamtoo. This also smells incredible and you get 30ml of product, perfectly sized for your handbag! This also only cost ยฃ2.50 which is such a bargain. At first I was worried it was going to be one of those metal tubes that look like scrunched up tissue after the first use but it’s actually made of plastic so it won’t look gross. It’s also fragranced with Vanilla and Red Berries, but it’s especially enriched with Cranberry Seed Oil from North America. It’s a gel-cream formula so it really keeps your hands hydrated and soft. It doesn’t leave my hands feeling greasy either which is a yes from me. I love it! Grab it here if you’re interested.
The Vanilla Chai Shower Gel also comes in a 250ml plastic bottle and has another cute little wreath design on it, I’m loving the festive vibes from these products. This is also priced at an extremely reasonable ยฃ2.50. It’s enriched with Vanilla extract and is fragranced with Vanilla (surprise surprise) and spiced up with Cardamon and Star Anise. I love the scent of this as it combines a buttery sweet fragrance with spices which I think is so perfect for the Winter months! Again, this shower gel lathers beautifully and leaves my skin feeling so soft. I really recommend this one, you can get it here!
Guess what I picked up next? Yep, the matching hand cream. If you know me you’ll know I like sets so this was impossible to resist. If I love the shower gel, I’m obviously going to love the same scent for on the go use right? The Vanilla Chai Hand Cream comes in a 250ml squeezy tube, ideal for travelling with. Ten points if you can guess the price of this one too…yep, ยฃ2.50!ย The smell of this just makes me feel warm and cosy, do you know what I mean? It reminds me of being under a throw on the sofa with a warm drink. It’s also made from vanilla and spices so it’s the perfect festive scent in my opinion! It’s the same gel formula as the other hand cream, meaning it leaves your hands feeling super soft and hydrated and of course, smelling bloody great too. If you like the sound of this, you can grab it here!
The Body Shop had lots of products on sale and another scent in the Christmas range that caught my attention was called Frosted Plum, which you can check out here. Their Christmas range is still available on their websitehere, and I’m sure is still available in some stores around the country too. Let me know what you guys think of The Body Shop or if any of you have tried their Christmas products out too!
I only started using KIKO products in the last couple of years. I was drawn in by a sale (surprise surprise) during summer a couple of years ago and I haven’t looked back since! I have purchased so many things, from eyeshadow palettes to cream shadows, from foundations to metallic lipsticks and I am yet to have a negative experience with any of their products. I have to say, I think KIKO is very underrated, I don’t hear that much about them in terms of reviews etc and I’m not sure why that is as they are a great company! KIKO have been around for 20 years, with over 1,000 stores in 20 countries. It’s influenced by modern Italy,ย focusing on art, fashion and design. KIKO offer over 1,400 products ranging from makeup, skincare, brushes and beauty sponges. I really recommend checking them out.
Whilst I was in Bath (read about my trip here), I was delighted to find a nice and spacious KIKO store. I had to restrain myself as there was so many things that caught my eye! One thing that I did pick up was their Arctic Holiday Baked Blush in 01 Marmoreal Biscuit. This product particularly caught my eye because of it’s stunning golden chrome/holographic packaging, perfect for the frozen theme of the collection. I think it looks pretty high end actually. It is priced at ยฃ16.90 but it is currently on sale at ยฃ11.80
I was surprised when I found that the blush came in a little silver bag. It made the product seem so luxury and fancy, again, reminding me of high end brands. Also it’s perfect for travelling with as I recently went away and I opened my makeup bag to find that my blush had smashed and in the process had covered all my other things, so this little bag will come in very handy!
So the blush comes in a silver, mirror-style plastic packaging which I think looks very sleek and elegant and it was designed by Ross Lovegrove. I also think it matches pretty well with the icy/glacial vibes that seems to be going on.
I love the fact that there is a mirror included, again, making it brilliant to travel with. I am usually super fussy with blushes. I tend to run away from anything bright or baby pink and I typically go for more muted and musky. I really liked the shade as soon as I saw it, as it’s what I would usually go for. I also liked that it’s a baked blush with a metallic finish. I’m so used to seeing plain old matte ones and I feel like they can be quite harsh on my face (I might just be crap at blending) so I was keen to try out a different type. The blush is described to have a fragrance of “ginger and spices” which I’m not so sure about. It definitely has a subtle but pleasant scent, however ginger and spices didn’t come to mind when I first sniffed it. The smell disappears when applied to the face as well so I’m not fussed.
As you can see, this is super pigmented (this was one swatch). It has the most gorgeous creamy texture to it, which makes it so easy to blend out for a more natural look. It gives the cheeks the perfect glow and brightens up my whole complexion. I wear a dewy foundation so this blush enhances that by adding a healthy dash of colour to my face. It wears for hours and I have received so many compliments so I will definitely be keeping this in my makeup bag!
I absolutely love this baked blush. It’s basically everything I want in one – a dash of pink, a healthy sheen and a creamy texture! It’s also priced very reasonably given the immediate colour payoff and also the quality of the product in how it applies and also how it’s presented in it’s gorgeous holographic packaging.ย I feel like KIKO doesn’t fit into the drugstore category nor does it fit into the high end category either so it’s sort of in the middle, so I kind of expect to pay a tad more than I would from a drugstore brand.ย The quality of their products is always high and their packaging is always very nice too. If you like the look of this blush it’s also available in two other shades! There’s also loads more in this collection so click here if you fancy taking a look at what else is available. Everything in the Arctic Holiday collection seems to be on sale to so go go go!
I would love to know if any of you have tried this blush out or anything else in their Christmas collection. Also, let me know what you think of KIKO in general as I don’t hear that much about them and would love to know if you guys enjoy their products too.
I have been a Zoella lover since I was around 13/14 years old. I used to read her blog and then I got really into her Youtube videos. I used to watch them religiously every day, some even twice! I have always admired her approach to mental health and her bubbly personality always cheers me up. Find her blog here, and click here for her Youtube channel! When I found out a couple of years ago that she was starting a beauty range (as well as a fab lifestyle range too) I was SO excited.
Her collections have been pun-tastic and if you know Zoe Sugg, you’ll know she loves a good old pun in all areas of life, so I wasn’t surprised to find that the 2017 Christmas range was called ‘Snowella’! I was extremely excited for this range. I remember watching her video where she introduced all of the products (you can watch it here) and I literally wanted everything that I saw. I was so tempted throughout most of December to grab these bits however I knew it would be available after Christmas too (when the sales hit), so I waited. I hate to be that person but I honestly can’t resist a bargain and there’s something way more satisfying about waiting to buy a product and when you finally get to, it’s cheaper than it was originally! So without further ado, let’s take a look…
I immediately wanted this because of the packaging, I mean it’s a flipping giant cracker with copper writing on it – come on?! Zoe definitely knew what she was doing with the packaging in this range actually, as it’s all so pretty and matching and it definitely makes you want it all so many marketing points to her for that one! First in the set, is the Snow Silky Body Lotion (100ml)ย and the Snow Fresh Body Wash (100ml) which both contain softening Peony, brightening Winter Cranberry and soothing Mint (similar to most of the products in the range). I like the packaging for these two, they have a matte finish plus there’s copper involved as well so I mean… Finally we’ve got the Winter Wonder Hand Handcream (90ml),ย which I originally thought was in a metal tube (like the body shop ones I already own) so I was kind of dreading using it as it would resemble a dried prune after the first squeeze. It turned out to be a plastic tube with a copper finish so I no longer have to lose any sleep over damaging the packaging (yes I am that sad). My skin is also as dry as sand paper during Winter so I do love a good handbag sized handcream and this is idea for on the go moisturising.
MORE COPPER PACKAGING – YES PLEASE. Within this set, you get two giant bath fizzers with giant snowflakes on them. These are filled with blue iridescent glitter so they look stunning in the bath and on your skin when you get out! The fizzers are loaded with Cocoa Butter, softening Peony, brightening Winter Cranberry and soothing Mint. They smell so fresh so I love using them for baths in the morning to wake me up.
I included the miniature body mist too, which comes as part of the All Four You giftset (I got this for my birthday). The larger bottle is available on it’s own with a gorgeous white pom pom attached. It’s definitely a bottle to have on show as it looks so luxe and delicate. I’m dreading the day this runs out! It’s the same scent as the rest of the products in the range, Winter Cranberry, Mint and Peony. Also, the reindeer is from Tiger for anyone eyeing him up.
The Merry & Bright Bubble Bath comes in a huge 490ml glass bottle. You get SO much product plus it’s absolutely beautiful and looks so pretty on the side in my bathroom. The bubble bath has a slight shimmer to it which I love and it also creates the best bubbles for a relaxing pamper night in! It comes with a pom pom hair tie, which I actually use if I want my hair out my face in the bath or when I’m using a face mask. I will definitely be reusing this bottle after I’m finished with the product! This is also in the Snow’ella scent.
So up first we have the Brew Me A Bath Bath Tea Bags, which I was most excited about, I think bath tea bags are such a cool concept.ย You get 8 x 20g bags which I think is great value for money (eight baths worth).ย The teabags look like they’re real, except they are filled with pink powder and there’s a cute little Z on the tag. I leave them under the tap and the powder dissolves, adding some moisture to the water but also creating some bubbles.
The Splash Of Milk Bath Milk Powder contains four 40g sachets of powder. I wish it contained more as I absolutely love this product! Empty your sachet under warm running water for a milky white moisturising bath.
I love this set as it comes with two products that are perfect for pampering yourself.
First, we have the Snow Polished Body Polish (100ml).ย I have to admit, I don’t actually use body polishes anywhere near the amount that I should. When I do use them, my skin feels incredible and always smells so lovely for hours afterwards. I like the fact that this body polish is foaming too, so it doesn’t feel to harsh on the skin like some of the others I have tried.
Snow Smooth Body Butter (100ml)ย I absolutely love this product. My skin also loves it too as it’s just so moisturising and I smell amazing for hours!
*ยฃ1.99 in Superdrug now or ยฃ4.80 from Feel Unique
I picked up one of these even though it also came in the You’re Cracking set because during Winter I get through hand cream like it’s air so I thought I would stock up before I have to say goodbye to this range.
This range is absolutely gorgeous, the packaging ticks all the aesthetic boxes for me with lots of copper, grey and pink (matching everything in my bedroom to be honest) and I just love the wide range of products. This is definitely my favourite range so far, I’m super impressed. I have to say though, some of these products were quite pricey to begin with (those are the prices I’ve written by every product above) and had there not been a sale, I probably wouldn’t have bought them. However, that doesn’t mean they aren’t good products or aren’t worth trying out, it just depends on your budget I guess. Let me know what you guys think of these products if you have tried them!
I’ve always loved reading people’s tag posts because I think they tell you a lot about a person and they’re always fun to read. I thought I would take part as I’ve never done one before so here you are, enjoy!
1. What is your favourite Christmas Movie/s?
I hate to be extremely predictable, but it’s got to be Love, Actually. I bloody love this film, it hits all the emotions and it’s such a feel good film. I don’t feel like it’s Christmas without watching it. Gotta love a bit of Colin Firth, Hugh Grant and Emma Thompson – not to mention Alan Rickman too.
2.ย Do you open your presents on Christmas Eve or Christmas morning?
We like to save the excitement for Christmas Day! I don’t think I’ve ever opened a present on Christmas Eve, it felt like there was a rule that shouldn’t be broken. I can remember being little and waking up in the middle of the night to find my stocking at the end of my bed, the temptation was unbearable. I remember poking my presents,ย trying to figure out what they were.
3. Do you have a favourite Christmas memory?
I remember sleeping in my brother’s room in a sleeping bag on his bedroom floor (our first sleepover) and in the morning we were opening our stockings and I got some little desks and lockers for my Barbie dolls. I’d wanted to play ‘schools’ with my dolls and now I could! – It’s the small things for 6 year old Nina haha!
4. Favourite festive food?
I’m aware these are around all year however there’s nothing like scoffing a box of Lindt chocolate truffles on Christmas Day – alone (no sharing whatsoever thank you). I’ve always loved pigs in blankets though, my mouth is watering just thinking about them. Recently I’ve also started enjoying festive inspired crisps. If you’re wondering what I’m on about, check out M&S for some very interesting combinations.
5. Favourite Christmas gift?
I have a few. First I have to say my Playmobil Hospital. I picked this with my parents and they hid it upstairs and I remember sitting in front of it every night and staring at it – I was so unbelievably excited. Another doll-related gift, I received a boy Bratz doll and I was over the moon. It was so difficult finding boy dolls anywhere so this was a groundbreaking moment for Nina’s doll collection.ย Another fond memory I have, I must’ve been pretty young, I was given a ‘Grease’ (as in the musical) handbag which I took everywhere with me as I was obsessed with the film. OBSESSED. I used to watch it every morning and pause it before school only to come back home and continue watching it from that point. My poor family probably didn’t fancy listening to ‘Summer Nights’ that frequently. Soz guys x
6. Favourite Christmas scent?
It’s got to be peppermint. I know it’s not particularly traditional but I’m loving it at the moment, it reminds me of candy canes! I find the traditional Christmas spice scent quite overpowering so I don’t tend to buy anything that smells of it. I have a couple of posts where I talk about my favourite festive candles so check them out here and here if you’re interested!
7. Do you have any Christmas Eve traditions?
We usually have something yummy to eat and we watch whatever festive shows that the BBC has to offer or we tune into a Christmas classic. At some point we usually watch something animated (Dreamworks or Pixar). Shrek the Halls is one of my favourites actually.
8. What tops your tree?
My brother made a little purple angel made from paper with a photo of his face on it when he was at school so it’s usually that. We have two trees and the other one doesn’t do a great job of supporting a star so I try and distract with lots of decorations instead.
9. As a kid what was the one (crazy, wild,ย extravagant) gift you always asked for but never received?
I don’t really remember asking for anything too nuts but I’m sure when I was really little and I thought anything was possible – I probably asked for all sorts.
10. What’s the best part about Christmas for you?
Cringey I know, but I’ve always loved giving people presents. My mum always gave me lots of little bits to open on birthdays and for Christmas as opposed to one or two big things. I always thought this was better and more exciting, I still do. So I enjoy all of the shopping and buying presents for friends and family. I feel like that little kid from the John Lewis advert haha! Another fab part of Christmas is of course, the huge sales. NEW CLOTHES AND MAKEUP YAY!
Feel free to answer these questions yourselves as I would love to hear about your Christmas traditions and favourites!
Tam Beauty are the company that own Freedom, Makeup Revolution and I Heart Makeup. They’re cruelty free and are based in Britain. You’ll most likely spot their products in your local Superdrug store. I’ve reviewed their Golden Bar palette if you fancy taking a look.ย When I heard that Soph was collaborating with Tam Beauty’s brandย Makeup Revolution to create a palette, I nearly passed out.ย I have watched Sophie’s videos for years now and she’s come so far I’m so proud to be a subscriber of hers. She is a Youtuber who is known as ‘Sophdoesnails’. She’s extremely down to earth and she’s soooo good at eye makeup looks. She also reviews the latest products in the beauty world, trying out all kinds of brands – affordable and expensive.ย ย I highly recommend that you go and check out her channel here. She also made an announcement video where she goes through each of the shades and explains her choices and reasoning behind the names and colours.
I’ve only just managed to get my hands on this palette so I thought a review was well overdue.
Let’s talk about this packaging. It’s a super pretty pastel pink colour that Soph actually designed herself. She’s very artistic (and extremely talented) and she actually painted the watercolour design that features on the packaging. I am loving the rose gold splatters and writing on it too (right up my street as you probably know). I will definitely be keeping the palette in it’s box as it’s just too pretty to throw away.
The actual palette itself is a matte nude, pastel peach colour with more rose gold lettering on it. It’s slim and lightweight and it’s also got a very generously sized mirror making it a brilliant palette to travel with or for on the go use.
Upon opening the palette you are greeted by 24 pans, 14 of which are matte shadows and 10 are shimmers. As you can see the palette includes a fantastic mix of shades giving you so manyย options when it comes to creating looks for every day or even looks for all out glam. There’s rich shimmers, bright pops of colour and even a matte black! What more could you need?! The shadows are all pigmented and buildable so you can be more subtle or go full on. I use a primer to ensure they wear all day long so I would recommend doing the same as you really get the most out of the shades. I would also recommend that you do your eyes before doing the rest of your face as I never learn and get a heavy dusting of shimmer all over my foundation covered cheeks – No thanks.
Penguin: A matte white –ย Quite powdery but is super pigmented for a white shadow.
Pancakes: A light neutral beige-ย Pretty accurate name for the colour actually, it’s a fab transition shade as well.
Fairy Lights: A white-gold shimmer –ย It’s not the most intense shadow in the palette but it’s still buildable and looks lovely for inner corner highlights or on the brown bone.
Pink Champagne: A pale pink shimmer –ย Again this isn’t very intense but it’s certainly buildable and looks so pretty on the inner part of the lid or even all over it.
Iced Coffee: A matte warm tan/neutral –ย Another perfect name. It really does look like the colour of iced coffee. I love using this to warm up the crease as a transition shade.
Cuppa Tea: A medium matte warm brown –ย I also love using this shade to warm up my eyeshadow looks.
Grow Old: A coppery-gold shimmer –ย This is so beautifully pigmented, I love it! I use this shadow all the time, it’s so warm and pretty.
Sparks Fly: A gold shimmer –ย The perfect gold shadow, it’s a must in any collection. It’s so pigmented and looks so gorgeous on the lids when the light catches it. I love using this for halo looks too.
Smokey Bronze: A dark smokey bronze metallic shimmer –ย You know me, I love anything bronze so I really enjoy using this shade. It’s great for smoking out shimmery looks.
Mixed Berries: A purple berry-toned shimmer –ย I’ve always loved using fun and bold colours within my every day makeup looks, so I was so happy to see this shade included in the palette. It’s also super pigmented too!
Tiramisu: A neutral matte medium brown –ย Again a great shadow for the crease as a transition shade. I also enjoy using this for more natural makeup looks too as it’s not too intense and can be blended out very easily.
Peaches: A warm matte peach –ย This is so creamy and pigmented. I love how rich and warm this shade is too. I can’t wait to use this in summer when I’m creating more orangey/gold looks.
Cloudberry: A matte light orange –ย This definitely has some subtle shimmer to it. It’s so pigmented and gorgeous I’m so happy this shade was included! Again, this will be perfect for warm toned looks in summer. I love that she named this because of the Moomin books too!
Pumpkin: A matte orange with red undertones –ย This shade surprised me so much when I swatched it. It’s so creamy and it’s extremely pigmented, I barely had to press on the pan to pick up what I did.
Pine Tree: An emerald green metallic shimmer – I can’t get over this shade. I am a lover of all things green and khaki as it’s a colour that seems compliment my skin tone so I was so excited about this colour being in the palette. It’s so unique and different from anything else that I have. I have really enjoyed using this for festive looks as it’s the perfect Christmas green in my opinion. It was the tiniest bit chalky to swatch but this didn’t cause any issues when applying.
Petrol: An iridescent metallic blue shimmer with brown undertones – I was really intrigued by this shade as I originally thought it was a blue shimmer. It’s actually a blue to brown shimmer. I was so surprised at how creamy feeling this shadow was. This is so unique, I’ve never owned an eyeshadow like this before!
Pug: A matte grey-brown taupe – Another shade that’s perfect for using in the crease or as a transition shade.
Danger: A red matte –ย I am a sucker for warm toned shadows so this is right up my street.
Strawberry Sweets: A matte warm strawberry pink –ย This is such a stunning shade. I like using this for my more bold coloured looks.
Festive Flame: Metallic red with orange undertones –ย Again this is a shade that’s so perfect for festive makeup looks.ย
Copper Coin: A true copper metallic shimmer with orange undertones –ย I LOVE THIS SHADE. It’s absolutely gorgeous and so pigmented for a drugstore shadow. Yes Soph!
Mugcake: A dark neutral matte brown –ย I have been using this to darken my outer v and it works a treat. It’s also warm toned which I am all about.
Rosewood: A dark cool toned brown with pink and purple undertones – I enjoy using this when I want a more cool toned but dark look.
Nightmare: A matte black –ย Finally a black shadow included in a colourful palette! It’s so fab for adding some drama to my eye looks. Perfect for a dark and dramatic smokey eye.
In conclusion, this palette is absolutely worth buying. For the price and the range of shades it’s just such good value. There’s so many different shades for every kind of look that you could wish to create and because there’s a mixture of mattes and shimmers you can create looks using only this palette. Some of the shades require a couple of layers to build up the colour payoff but of course, this is more than okay for a drugstore palette that only costs ยฃ10. I am so impressed that this was created by Soph and it’s the first thing she’s created – what an achievement! You can get the palette from Superdrug in stores and onlineย and on Tam Beauty’s website.
I will be reviewing her highlighter palette soon so keep an eye out for that! If you’ve tried either of Soph’s products I would love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
Superdrug is my favourite place to go when hunting for new (affordable) makeup. They nearly always have at least one display of theย TAM Beauty make up brands, Makeup Revolution, Freedom Makeup and I Heart Makeup. I am such a huge fan of these products as they’re always of such high quality and yet they’re priced affordably – what more could you want?
The beauty community has definitely been talking about theย I Heart Revolutionย palettes and rightly so! They’re becoming more and more popular after they launched a collection of dupes for theย Too Faced Chocolate Bar palettes. They even duped the Sweet Peach palette (I will be comparing the two in a review soon!). The latest palette from this fabulous brand is the Golden Bar Palette. You can most likely buy this from your local Superdrug store or order it from their site online. TAM Beauty ship internationally so you can also order it on their website.
I fell in love with this palette as soon as I saw it, the packaging certainly sucked me in – TAM Beauty knew exactly what they were doing! All of the palettes in this collection are designed to look like chocolate bars however this one caught my eye when I noticed the metallic gold packaging.ย It’s a fricking gold chocolate bar! I also loved the melting chocolate on the front of the palette, it reminded me slightly of theย Kylie Cosmeticsย packaging.
Not a bad view huh? Featuring 16 shades, this palette was a steal at only ยฃ9, especially if you consider the ridiculously expensive Too Faced palettes (ยฃ40). The Golden Bar palette may not be exactly the same, however, it’s extremely similar and it’s certainly giving them a run for their money. In my opinion, if you can purchase a highly pigmented palette for even the price of a more expensive one, you’re onto a winner. There’s also a very generously sized mirror covering the entire lid, making this a great palette to travel with. The one thing that I didn’t enjoy about the packaging, was the plastic overlay that had the shade names on it. I would much rather have a palette with the names printed below each shade, making life that little bit easier, especially for tutorials or reviews like this one. Another thing to keep in mind that also let me down slightly is that there are no matte shades. This means a full look can’t really be completed as there is nothing to use as a transition shade so you’d need to use another palette.
Collection:ย A cool icy white shimmer –ย I love using this for inner corner highlights and under my brows! I sometimes even dot above my lips for a more defined cupid’s bow.
Ribbon:ย A light pink champagne-shimmer – I would say this is one of the more subtle shades but it’s certainly buildable. I sometimes use a setting spray to intensify it which works perfectly!
Edible:ย A muted taupe-brown shimmer – In my opinion, this is the least pigmented shadow in the palette. I like the colour for a more subtle hint of brown in my crease but it’s no way near as pigmented as some of the other shades. Again, if you use a setting spray it can intensify it.
Tablet:ย A dark bronze/gold shimmerย – I love using this shadow as it’s darker than the other gold shimmers in the palette so it’s perfect for a less blinding look (I’m all down for full-on lightbulbs on the lid though)
Wrapped:ย A red/purple toned brown shimmer –ย I love using this to slightly smoke out my outer lid, however, it’s a shimmer shade of course so it’s not as intense as a matte shadow would be.
Wrapper:ย A warm orange/yellow gold with brown undertones –ย I often use this shade with warm toned shadows to create a red toned look. The orange undertones also meant I could use it for Autumnal looks as well!
Foil:ย A golden shimmerย – I often use this in the centre of the lid as it’s just such a gorgeous shimmer. I used this for a halo smokey eye look the other day and it did a fab job!
Golden:ย A rich golden shimmer –ย This is my favourite shadow in the palette. It’s just so insanely pigmented, it’s INCREDIBLE. I can’t believe this came in a palette that costs ยฃ9…? It really does show that you don’t need to break the bank to own some crazily pigmented shadows.
Bar:ย A bronze shimmer with olive-green undertones – I tend to use this shade less as it’s not as blinding or rich as the other gold shades however it’s still a unique colour to have in a palette.
Box:ย A khaki shimmer – I love this shade, it always looks nice on the lid with a smokey outer corner. I’m a fan of any coloured shadows, especially khaki as I already wear so much of this colour (90% of my wardrobe).
Block:ย Taupe/dark brown shadow with purple undertones –ย I use this all the time to add some drama to my eye makeup looks, it’s another great shadow for intensifying the outer lid and creating a smokey eye.
Gift:ย A milk-chocolate brown shimmer –ย This is what I would call the perfect chocolate shimmery brown shadow. It’s quite a warm shade too so I like using it for red/orange toned looks but it looks good as part of an everyday look as well.
Limited:A musky pink/purple shimmer with light brown undertones –ย I absolutely adore this shade, it’s such a gorgeous mixture of pink and purple and of course, it’s shimmery! It looks even better when applied with a setting spray.
Cocoa: A rich red/burgundy shimmer –ย I am loving using this shade for red smoky eyes which is fab for festive makeup looks!
Beans:ย A medium-brown shimmer –ย This is a pretty similar shade to Block, however, I prefer it. It’s lighter and easier to blend into a more everyday look. It’s slightly darker than Limitedย which makes it better for a smokey eye.
Chocolatier:ย A light nude/prosecco shimmer with cool undertones – I was pretty disappointed with this shade. Yes, it’s pigmented however it’s so chalky and powdery so getting your brush to pick up the right amount is difficult. It still looks great on the lid, especially for a halo look or inner corner highlights.
Overall, I think this palette is SUCH good value, given how pigmented each individual shadow is. I also have to mention how well the shadows last, they don’t crease and I don’t even use a primer which speaks volumes. The packaging is also amazing and of high quality, unlike some of my cardboard based palettes. I love the variety of colours that this palette offers for such a low price. The negatives of this palette, for me, was the fact that the shade names weren’t printed inside and that there were no matte shades so I can’t use it on its own. However, I would recommend this to anyone looking to build their collection of shimmer shadows as they’re all great quality and very pigmented.
Let me know if you would like reviews of any of the other bits in this collection as I own most of it!
I love making my bedroom feel warm and cosy, especially when it’s so cold and dark outside! As you all know, I am a lover of all things homeware and decor so Christmas is my excuse to buy some more! Christmas is only a week away and I have bought some festive bits and bobs to jazz up my room and I thought I would share these with youย so that you can grab them in time for theย occasion!
Primarkย Glitter Tealights -These tealights are so glam looking and they make a nice change from the normal ones I use. I love the colours they come in too as they match the copper/gold aesthetic of my room perfectly!
Asda 3ft White Christmas Tree – I have always wanted a mini Christmas tree for my bedroom so when I saw this I had to get it. I specifically wanted a 3ft tree, so there were enough branches to decorate but it wouldn’t be towering over me. I went for a white tree because it looked so pretty with my rose gold/pink baubles!
Primarkย Pack of 25 Rose Gold/Gold/Pink/Purple Baubles – I thought that these might look quite tacky but once on the tree with some fairy lights an tinsel, the overall effect was actually lovely and really luxe!
Sainsbury’s Polar Bear Tealight Holder –ย I was so shocked at how discounted so much of the Christmas homeware was! I couldn’t believe this was only ยฃ2.50 given it’s of a reasonable size and can fitย four tealights in! I would really recommend having a look at the home sections near you as there are loads of great bits and pieces!
Dunelm Cinnamon Cake Tealights – As you know, I am a candle addict and when I saw these I couldn’t leave them behind.ย They smell amazing.ย I have been a fan of Dunelm’s Churchgate Fragrancesย range for a long time, particularly the salted caramel candles! They also have Chocolate Orange, Frosted Mint, and Winter Berries! If you want to see what else I recommend, check out my Autumnal and Winter candles posts!
Homesense – Glittery Glass Bowlย – I love a good trip to Homesense, it’s very rare that I don’t end up buying something either. After about an hour of browsing my local store, my boyfriend was desperately attempting to leadย meย to the tills in order to actually leave. All was going to plan until I spotted this. It’s so beautifully made, I haven’t seen anything like it. I looked at my boyfriend and we both thought the same thing “this is going to be expensive” IT WAS ยฃ2.99 PEOPLE. This is why Homesense is my favouriteย store (I actually have a post about this).
Primark – Copper Christmas Tree Light –ย I actually got this light quite a while ago. They still have it in stock – do not fear! I love how industrial it looks and of course, it’s has a copper finish so it’s win-win.
PoundLandย – Ceramicย Santa Decorations –ย I thought these were so sweet and they look adorable on my windowsill! I like the handmade element to them as well, it looks like something I would’ve made to put out for Santa when I was younger.
Tiger – Mini Gold Snowglobe –ย This was something my boyfriend held up in the air from across the store – he chose right! I’ve never actually had a snowglobe, I’m not sure why as they’re so sweet and festive. You may also see a miniature mushroom and some suspiciously small berries in the photo. These are actually part of a candle ring that I also bought from Tiger! I also have a post about why I love Tiger so much too!
I’d love to know if you have bought any little bits and pieces for your rooms/homes so do let me know in the comments!
I recently visited Edinburgh with my boyfriend. One thing I didn’t talk about in my post, was the number of homeless people I saw. I felt so helpless, as many of us do, debating as to whether I should give them money or not, uncertain as to how they might spend that money. So how can you know, for sure, where the money is going? One way is to buy some food or water and just hand it to them with a few kind words. In doing this, I have had some amazing conversations with people over a sandwich and a hot chocolate. If you don’t feel this is something you can do, for whatever reason, here’s something you might consider.
There is an app called StreetLink, which “exists to help end rough sleeping”. It enables any member of the public to connect local support services and those who are sleeping on the streets. This is what you need to do. It’s straightforward. It’s easy.
Here’s how it works:
If you pass someone who is sleeping rough in England or Wales and this concerns you, you can send an alert to StreetLink. You can alert theย local authority or local outreach service so that they can findย the person you have seen and give them the support that they need. All you have to do is say where and when you have seen the person and include some simple details like gender, age, clothing etc.ย Within 10 days, if you wish, you will receive details of any action taken by the local authority, in response to your alert.
There’s no risk, there’s no commitment, there is no further responsibility on your part.ย Yes, it’s that easy and the app is free. Doing what I’ve described above will not cost you a penny, but, why not also donate to help this fantastic organisationย here.
Why not let this be your Christmas donation this year?ย
Download it and start helping a homeless person now.
I would find it heartwarming to hear of anything you do, so please do share it in a comment.
Today I’m talking about one of my favouriteย beauty brands,ย Soap and Glory. Given thatย Christmas is fast approaching, I couldn’t think of a better time to let you all know what this fabulous brand has in stock, just in time for some last minute buying of stocking fillers. Soap and Glory always have the most gorgeous gift sets at this time of year too which make perfect Christmas presents!
I have always been sucked in by anything pink or gimmicky, let alone an entire wall of it (in some boots stores – SOS from my bank account). That’s how I got into Soap and Glory products, I was lured in by their gorgeous packaging.ย When I first noticed Soap and Glory’s products in my local Boots store, they were mainly selling body lotions and hand lotions. The range is now absolutely huge compared to what it was a few years ago and I couldn’t be happier about this!
Over the years I have developed a strong love for all things Soap and Glory and I thought Iย would share my favourite products with you!
Let’s talk moisturisers…
Arguably, Soap and Glory are most well known for their body lotions and rightly so! I absolutely love covering myself in moisturisers, especially at this time of year. I always feel so smooth and soft and I smell bloody fab after using these products.
The Righteous Butter Body Lotionย (travel size) – ยฃ2.50 – This is probably Soap and Glory’s most well-known scent, with Shea Butter and Aloe Vera. It smells so good. On the back of the tube, you are asked to “Butter the devil you know” (typical puns from Soap and Glory)ย and especially pay attention to rougher spots.ย I love keeping this in my bag and suitcase for whenever I travel or stay anywhere. It makes me feel so pampered and leaves me soft and moisturised.
Hand Food Hand Creamย (travel size) – ยฃ2.50 – Another of their legendary products, the Hand Food hand cream is one of my favourites. During Winter I get particularly dry hands so I absolutely love keeping this in my bag for on the go use. The hand cream contains Shea Butter and Macadamia oil AND marshmallow (gasp) it smells incredible. It’s fragranced with Soap and Glory’s signature scent of Rose and bergamot. Unlike lots of hand creams that I’ve tried before now, it isn’t sticky or greasy – which is a must for me in glove wearing season.
Hand Food Hand Cream Pump – ยฃ7 – Although having the travel size version of this gorgeous hand cream is perfect for on the go, I do like to keep the pump one in my bathroom for more heavy duty use. Again it’s fragranced with rose and bergamot (heaven on earth).
Heel Genius Foot Cream – ยฃ5.50 –ย I used to dance pretty much every day of the week and with that came gross feet. I was in desperate need of moisture and this became my solution! It features orange and lemon fruit acid, bilberry, menthol, macadamia oil, glycerin and allantoin which is the perfect combo for tackling feet as dry as sandpaper. Try it, your feet will thank you later!
Sugar Crush Body Buttercream – ยฃ10 – Sugar Crush is my absolute FAVOURITE scent by Soap and Glory. This body lotion is fragranced with lime oil, kiwi juice water, and lime tree blossom extract which makes it perfect for waking you up in the morning as it’s just so refreshing and zingy. I tend to slather this on after a shower or a bath and it keeps me feeling soft and smooth for the rest of the day. Of course, it’s loaded with moisturisingย sweet almond oil and coconut oil and shea and cocoa butter.ย You also get a generous amount of product and for ยฃ10 I think that’s a great deal.
Moving on to my favourite bath and shower goodies…
Clean On Me Shower Gelย – ยฃ6.50 – I usually have a bottle of thisย in stock somewhere in my bathroom. I just loveย the clean and fresh scent of this shower gel, which contains mandarin peel extract. It smells divine and it makes me feel so pampered and silky soft after my shower. You can smell it on your skin hours later which is a bonus plus ยฃ6.50 is such a great price for a huge 500ml bottle – go grab it!
(They’ve actually changed the name of this) to Scrub of Your Life Body Scrubย – ยฃ7 –ย It smells so fresh and clean!ย This scrub is so creamy and thick and it’s packed with scrubbing beads so that you can exfoliate to your heart’s desire.
The Rushower Scentsational Dry Shampoo – ยฃ4 – My mum gave me this for my birthday and I am so glad that she did, it’s a lifesaver! I usually Batiste’s dry shampoos, however, I have always hated how rough they make my hair feel and how difficult they are to blend out into my hair without it looking like I’ve gone grey or I’ve got suspiciously widespread dandruff. Rushower, leaves my hair feeling silky smooth and it blends into my roots like a dream, absorbing any gross oils with it. It also smells incredible with mandarin, rose and bergamot – erm yes please? You can smell it for hours after you sprayed it as well, which I love.
Sugar Crush Body Spray – ยฃ4 – I was so happy when Soap and Glory created this spray as it’s already my favourite scent that they’ve done.ย It’s fragranced with lemon oil and Elemi oil which I find to be so refreshing in the morning before I go to university. There’s also elements of vanilla, ginger, sweet lime and smashed brown sugar which is simply a drool-worthy combination. It’s like they bottled happiness. Go and have a sniff and let me know if you love it as much as I do!
No Clogs Allowed – ยฃ11.50 – No apologies for the well-loved appearance of this one – I just love it so much. It’s perfect for a pamper night once a week (I mean I have one every day if possible, oops) when your skin needs resurrecting. I always apply it in my problem areas (on my face of course) and I let it do its thing for about 10-15 minutes. I have definitely noticed a huge difference after using this mask. I have tried all kinds in my time yet this one just continues to impress me.
ย If you haven’t tried anything out by Soap and Glory yet, I honestly can’t recommend their products highly enough! Not only are all of the products of suchย high quality but the packaging that they come in is simply gorgeous and are usually a glimpse at their fab sense of humourย with gimmicky names and play on words. All of the scents are amazing too, I am yet to dislike one! Usually, around this time of year, there are lots of offers on their products, so stock up now! Let me know if you have any Soap and Glory favourites too, I’m always looking for an excuse to buy more of their products!
Ohh Deer, a company I have SO much love for,ย was founded in order to allow illustrators and artists to showcase their work and find people that would be interested in buying their designs. The company sells the most amazing quirky and arty products – I simply can’t get enough. I love the fact that Ohh Deer offers artists the opportunity to get noticed and therefore get something back for all their hard work that otherwise we might not have seen. Some of their clients include Paperchase, ASOS, John Lewisย andย Oliver Bonas (my all-time favourite shop) and some of their collections have been specifically designed for the Tate Galleries and the Science Museum!
WHAT IS PAPERGANG?
Ohh Deerย decided to create a monthly subscription service for stationery addicts, such as myself called,ย Papergang!ย Each month you will receive a box filled with brilliant papery goodies and desk accessories. Some examples are notebooks, greeting cards, wrapping paper and art prints. It costsย ยฃ10.95 and then a ยฃ2.95 for shipping which in my opinion, after receiving their boxes, is a great deal. Every box has a different design and theme by a different artist and for every 4 boxes, 1 tree is planted in partnership with the fantastic charity, Tree aid. To find out more about their connection with this charity here.
I am a huge stationary addict and this subscription box is probably my favourite out of the many I am a part of. I always look forward to opening my box every month and using all my new bits and pieces! Most of the products you receive are exclusive the Papergang subscribers for a while before they get sold in Ohh Deer’s shop.
This month’s box is all about the amazing charity ofย Battersea Dogs and Cats Homeย and it was illustrated by Allison Black. (Insta – @AllisonBlackIllustration). The packaging is so colourful and fun I absolutely love it.
So let’s take a look at the first product!
Six Christmas Cards – ยฃ10
This month we were treated to SIX Christmas cards, all pet related. The card designs are so fun and unique, perfect for sending to family and friends who are animal lovers! The card with the grumpy looking cat is perfect for a friend I have, whose cat frequently gets caught in all of the fairy lights at Christmas! There’s also something adorable about a bulldog in a Christmas sweater, I love this design! However, my favourite has to be the Daschund cardย which I will be sending to my nan as she has a little sausage dog and I reckon this will make her smile. There’s also an offer on – buy 2 cards and get the 3rd one free.
ย I was most impressed when I spotted this ‘perfect bound’ A5 notebook. It’s thick too, with lined pages which I actually prefer to plane pages as I find it’s easier to make notes and keep everything organised and neat. Nice quality notebooks like this are usually quite expensive as well!
2 x Gift Wrap – ย ยฃ3.50
I often find that buying sheets of wrapping paper can be expensive. In this month’s box, we received not one but TWO sheets of gift wrap and given the other items that we received as well, this box works out at incredibly good value. Each sheet is printed onto 100% recycled paper and is 50cm x 70cm.
Gift Tags – ยฃ0.95
I love making presents look like I spent lots of time on them as I am quite a perfectionist with giftwrapping. I’ve started to love using ribbon and bows and so I was super excited to see three gift tags in this month’s box. Each label is 9.5cm x 4.5cm and some candy cane style (red and white) string was included to attach them with.
Once again, Papergang has really impressed me. These products are, as usual, of the highest quality. The illustrationsย on each product are super fun and creative, I will definitely be buying some more of Allison Black’s work! I love this month’s theme as I think Christmas is a great time for giving and helping out others – even if they have bark
I took my boyfriend to Edinburgh for the weekend, for a combined birthday and Christmas present. For the first time ever, I chose to look at Air BnBs instead of hotels. I was surprised at how many results came up! I ended up choosing a beautiful apartment in one of Edinburgh’s Georgian crescents, in Stockbridge.ย The apartment was based on the ground floor (YAY – no stairs to crawl up after a long day) with a bedroom, bathroom and a living space with a built-in kitchen. Everything was so beautifully put together, it seemed like a lot of thought went into the apartment decor, it felt so luxurious. Despite the high ceilings, we were able to keep cosy with the fireplace in the living room. They even left us some prosecco, whisky, and gin along with tea, coffee, and milk which was so generous! There was also a little hamper in the bathroom full of skincare bits and toiletries, another lovely touch!
We were a 10-15 minute walk away from the city centreย which was perfect for getting back home with lots of shopping bags when it was freezing cold outside! The area was very peaceful and quiet which was perfect toย come back to after a long day spent amongst the heaving crowds in the city. On our walk, we had to cross a bridge that had such a pretty view of the river beneath it.
On the way into town, there was a gorgeous little Patisserie that caught my eye, called Patisserie Florentin. Pop in if you ever get the chance, the interior design is super quirky and cosy, a really lovely place to stop by. They do the BEST smoked salmon and cream cheese bagels (ask for it with avocado too!)
On George Street, there were a few stalls were selling handmade gifts and confectionary. There were beautifulย festive designsย projected onto buildings. It was so colourful and vibrant. We thought these were the only festivities to be expected from Edinburgh but we were so wrong…
ย We carried on exploring and happened to stumble upon the biggest Christmas market either of us has ever seen. It was so big there were even multiple levels of it! There were hundreds of little stalls selling gifts, in the traditional Santa’s grotto-type wooden huts. You can see Edinburgh castle lit up in the background!
There seemed to be lots of stalls dotted around, selling lanterns and candles which were all handmade and unique. They would make brilliant gifts for family and friends over the Christmas holidays. The tealight holders in the photo below looked fantastic. They had unique designs carved onto the outside of the holders so that when a candle was placed inside, the design would be projected onto the space around it!
The lanterns also looked incredible when it was dark outside, they were all clustered together and looked so effective! Again, these were all handmade and ready to give as gifts!
These origami-style star lights were so beautiful to look at. They were selling all kinds of patterns and sizes and different shapes, there was something for everyone! I would’ve loved this kind of thing as a kid!
My favourite stall to look at was the hand-carved wooden candle holders (bottom left- as you can see I was trying to find an excuse to stay here all night). There were miniature woodland scenes carved into some and moons and stars in others. I had never seen anything like this before!
There were the usual Christmas market stalls selling hundreds of kitsch decorations, which made it feel that little bit more festive. There were tiny bearded Santas and tartan covered reindeer, if you can imagine it, it’s probably sold somewhere in the depths of the market!
Of course, there was plenty to eat and drink. There were stalls selling German hotdogs and other delicacies, chocolate covered marshmallows (you’ll understand why my love for these is so strong if you click here) There were huge colourful mountains of different flavoursย of fudge, Belgian hot chocolate with your choice of syrup, crepes with all kinds of toppings available…the list is endless. There was also a bar built for the occasion, similar to the one I described in my post about Nottingham’s Winter Wonderland,ย it was full of antique mirrors and candles and was so relaxing and warm to walk into away from the bustling crowds outside in the cold.
There was also a HUGE Big Wheel and some teacup rides, a helter skelter, flying chairs and a gentle rollercoaster for the little ones! The lights and music from all of the rides made it feel so much more festive and lively regardless of some of the terrified screams from a rather menacing looking star flyer (bottom left).
We dedicated one day to exploring the streets closer to the castle. There were quirky little gift shops and bars but to my delight, there was an entire shop dedicated to Harry Potter merchandise. I was in Hogwarts heaven… apologies if Harry Potter isn’t for you, however in the words of JK Rowling โI donโt think everyone should believe in magic, but Iโm not sure I would trust anyone who doesnโtโ.
We were going to go on a tour of the castle, however, it cost ยฃ17 just to go inside, so we stuck to just admiring it from the outside. By the time we got there it was already dark, however, it was so beautifully lit up that it was still just as amazing to take it all in when stood in front of it. The view from on top of the hill was stunning, the lights from the city lit the way for miles. I’m usually not one for scenic views, but this was breathtaking (photos don’t do it justice)
If you get the chance, go to Edinburgh in December, as the whole city is so festive and lively. There’s something for everyone! I would suggest wrapping up VERY warm as it is absolutely freezing there! I’m sure it’s still just as beautiful to visit during the summer, however, we will definitely be returningย to the Christmas market. Let me know if any of you have visited, or are hoping to visit Edinburgh before Christmas, I would love to hear what you got up to and what you thought about it!
So, I have always loved reading blog posts and watching youtube videos where people talk about the apps they love to use. I thought Iย would share something similar with you, as I seem to have accumulated quite the collection of apps on my phone!
VSCO
I’ve used this app since I got an iPhone years ago, it’s definitely my favourite. I use it to edit my photos before uploading them to Instagram, as the VSCO allows you to upload straight from the app which is super handy. I also use itย before I put pictures into my blog posts.ย You can upload images straight from your camera roll and edit them using different filters and by adjusting the brightness and exposure etc. VSCO also lets you create a profile within the app, which allows you to upload photos for others in the community to see. You can also see what others have managed to create using the amazing filters that VSCO provides. You can download some ofย the presets for free and you can also buy packs of them which I have done and found to be really worth the money! These filters get permanently added to your collection. It’s such a great app for editing your own work and looking at what others have been able to do with the app. I would definitely recommend this to anyone that enjoys editing photography or being creative in their spare time.
DESIGN HOME
So this app is technically a game and it is truly the most addictive thing on earth. There’s something so therapeutic about it. The aim is to design the interior of the rooms given to you in challenges, and the higher you score the more rewards you win as a result. You can buy new items for your game that actually exist in the real world, so if something takes your fancy, you can also buy it in real life. There are new releases of furniture in the in-game shop every single day. There’s also the option to view other peoples designs and vote for your favourites to earn some of the in-game currency. It’s a great game for anyone that loves interior design and it never gets old due to its frequent updates and makeovers. The company that created the game, Crowdstar Inc, also have a game that’s extremelyย similar but focuses on fashion, called Covet Fashion, which I also play!
21 BUTTONS
21 buttons is such a unique app, it feels like one of those things you would have described as your dream app a few years ago, but it seemed impossible at the time, but it’s here and it’s brilliant. 21 buttons allows you to view a never-ending feed, full of fashion trends tailored specifically to your taste. You can view other people’s outfits and save them in ‘wishlist’ style folders. You can even share your own outfits, tagging each individual item and wait for it…you can earn money doing so! You earn a small commission every time someone purchases an item that you’ve provided a link for. Great idea, right? You can withdraw the money from your balance every time it reaches ยฃ10, which can add up quicker than you think if you upload frequently. I would love it if you could follow me on 21 Buttons:ย ninalouise
DAY ONE
The best way to describe Day One is that it’s like a diary. Day by day you can write about what you get up to and add photos. It’s a great way to store loads of memories for a rainy day when you feel like reminiscing. I’ve been using this since summer and it’s so nice to have all my memories in one place. I’m looking forward to spending part of New Year’s Day going back over what I have been up to this year! I would recommend this to anyone that never gets round to using a diary (me) as you’re likely to have your phone on you anyway and it’s quick and easy to do.
TASTY
So I’m sure lots of you are familiar with the super speedy and quirky recipe videos that have been circulating Facebook, however, if you aren’t, this app shall reveal all! Tasty is basically a recipe bank (1700+ recipes) all on your phone, with all of the handy little videos available at one tap of your thumb. The videos demonstrate how to make a delicious meal ingredient by ingredient, which just makes life that little bit easier. You can filter what recipes you’re looking for with options like “weeknight” or “under 30 minutes”! There are literally HUNDREDS of recipes to choose from so you’re bound to find something that suits you and to top it all off, it’s FREE!
FREEPRINTS
My boyfriend and I started scrapbooking when we got together and we like to print photos out and make pages representing special days or date nights we’ve had so we can look back on a year’s worth of us! I originally used to go to Boots, plug my phone in and print a load of photos out and I would pay the price they were charging as I didn’t know where else I could get photos printed for any cheaper. I ended up paying ยฃ20 for 40 photos! I then found FreePrints and it changed my life. Every month, the app gives you 45 free photos to print out and you only pay for the delivery. If you want or need to print more than 45 photos, you will then be charged based on how many extra prints you pick. You can edit and adjust the photos before they arrive (crop etc) and then you’re done! Just like that and no it’s not too good to be true!
POLYVORE
Polyvore is such a great app. It’s still fairly new to me so I’m still figuring bits and bobs out BUT so far so good! You can keep on top of the latest trends in the fashion world, search for specific items that you’re interested in and create sets for other users to find and like. You can share your sets on social media too so others can see your creations! It’s great for getting outfit inspiration too, I really love seeing what other people have come up with. It’s also free!
INFLUENSTER
Influenster is an app that allows you to review products, read what other people have to say and also, receive some fantastic products from brands. When you create an account, you can connect Influenster to your various social media platforms. The app then calculates how many people you can reach and then brands may or may not see you aa suitable influencer to publicly review their products. It may sound easy but you really have to work hard when reviewing products and making sure you build up a following in order to get noticed. However, the app is great just for finding reviews and checking out the latest products in the beauty community. There’s even a whole community of people reviewing food! There’s something for everyone and of course, it’s free! I would recommend this to bloggers as it’s a great way to review bits and pieces within a huge community.
I would love to know what apps you guys use and love, I’m always looking for something new to try!
Despite the imminence of festivity, December can be the toughest month of the year for some people – it’s not always mince pies and mistletoe. Today, is why I sometimes dread Christmas coming around.
Before I begin, I want to warn you that this is about grief and loss.
My brother Ben was the happiest and most positive person I’ve ever had the pleasure of spending time with. We had lots of happy happy times together, we were inseparable. He was so cheeky and special, life was left pretty boring without him. If you imagine yourself watching the colourful world go by, and all of a sudden a black and white film is cast over everything. That’s the only way I can describe how it felt to lose him. Trying to describe him is too difficult as there aren’t enough words in the world to do it, nor would any be good enough. Unfortunately, Ben died in December which sometimes makes the month quite a difficult time for me. It seemed strange to go through today and post about something trivial when this is such a big part of my life so I hope you don’t mind me telling you about it.
Ben had two disabilities, an unusual combination of Cerebral Palsy and Crohn’s Disease. Two awful disabilities that both had a huge impact on his life. He had good and bad years and during some of the worst, he would be in hospital for long periods of time. 2009 just happened to be one of those bad years. I remember going to bed one night feeling like something wasn’t right and I couldn’t sleep because I was thinking too much. I heard Ben start crying, which was normal to some extent. I went into his room and tried to comfort him and talk to him but he was really poorly. He was vomiting a lot and he kept drifting in and out of consciousness. We all knew something was different this time and I remember my mum was calling people to get advice and explain his symptoms. An ambulance came and paramedics wrote down the details on their gloves. Meanwhile, I packed some things to take with me and I remember stopping to tell my dolls “Ben’s probably not going to come back but I’ll see you soon!”. I guess something had already clicked with me but I was in total denial at the time. My dad and I followed the ambulance to the hospital.
I remember noticing how pale Ben was as they wheeled him into Accident and Emergency. We sat in one of those horribly lit rooms for what felt like hours. I remember being so tired I couldn’t keep my eyes open so Dad found a spare bed for me to sleep in. I can’t remember how I got there, but the next thing I can remember is being sat on a chair by my brother in a children’s ward. He had an oxygen mask on and was surrounded by lots of very concerned looking doctors and nurses. Again, I can’t remember how I got there but I remember next being sat in a family room, playing a video game with another patient there. I remember dad coming to get me and I was then told to go and tell Ben how much I loved him. I talked to him for a while and sung him one of his favourite songs, “Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head”. My nan and grandad came to collect me and I remember they turned up with teddies in the back of the car for me to cuddle on the way home.
When we got there I went round to play at their next-door neighbours as he was a couple of years younger with me and I often went round to see him. I remember passing his mum in the kitchen and casually saying “I don’t think he’s going to make it” and carrying on up the stairs. A little while later, the doorbell rung and my nan had come round to tell me my mum had called and that when I was ready I could go back and call her. I could tell something wasn’tย right just from looking at her face. Obviously, at the time, I had no idea that she already knew, so it must have been incredibly hard for her to act oblivious whilst I sat on her living room floor saying how excited I was for him to come home. The phone rang and my nan asked me to pick it up. I’m assuming for my own sake, my brain has stopped me being able to recall this conversation properly. All I can remember is asking mum when Ben was coming home and she had to tell me he had died a few minutes before. I can remember feeling a huge wave of shock and immense sadness. My nan came and sat me on her lap whilst she spoke to mum on the phone. I could hear my grandad burst into tears in the room next door. Ben had died in hospital and I wasn’t there. This is probably the most painful part for me as I am constantly processing the huge level of regret that I feel. I wish I’d never left him there.
Before I carry on, I need to explain a bit about a place that helped us out massively during all of this, so some background is necessary. My family and I had stayed at Helen House with Ben a few times. Helen House is a place where sick and disabled children can stay at, in order to have a break or a bit of a holiday with the facilities of a hospital, which means that you can get the medical care and one to one attention that you need, at all times. If any of you have been to a hospital, you will know that itโs just not a fun place to be, you might have to wait a long time for a doctor to prescribe pain relief, or you might spend hours waiting to get someone who can help you have a bath or get out of bed and go for a walk, but at Helen House, because there is always at least one member of staff dedicated to help each child and also to entertain any siblings, at all times, there is no waiting around and lots more fun for everyone, to help them through really difficult times. We will forever be in their debt, as no amount of money we raise will come anywhere near the real cost of what they have provided for my brother and my family. We didnโt have to pay a penny, but the help was there when we needed it.
For my brother, it was really wonderful, because people really focused on making him comfortable and happy and giving him medication whenever he needed it. I always remember how delighted he was when he went there. He spent quite a lot of time in hospital in the months before he died, but also regularly went to Helen House for special care and he was so much more smiley than in hospital. Being in Helen House made us think far less about the fact that he was dying and far more about the fact that he was really living when he was there, which encouraged us to make the most of the time we had with him. Helen house is a very kind place and the kindness goes on even after a child has died.
A member of staff from Helen House came to the hospital to support my parents and explained that my brother could be taken to Helen House and that a flat would be made available for us all to stay in, while they helped us to make arrangements for his funeral. I was able to use a room in a private part of the house, to sit with Ben and say goodbye in my own time over the next week. This isnโt something that a hospital can offer, as it was comfortable and relaxing without the constant beeping of medical equipment, which as a twelve-year-old kid, was something I really needed to help me come to terms with what had happened, I will always be grateful for this opportunity and for the support that they gave me and my family during that horrible week.
Incredible work is done by Child Bereavement UK, an organisation, that “supports families and educates professionals when a child of any age dies or is dying, or when a child faces bereavement” and they help thousands of people every year.
I can’t really explain what it means to have lost someone that was such a huge part of my life. I can’t explain what it felt like. Grief is a very individual thing. The part I find the hardest, is telling people how long it’s been. Sometimes people think that the further away the date is, the more likely I am to be “over it” or “okay now” which I can assure you is not the case. That’s probably why I dread each year coming to a close, as it’s a painful reminder that another year has slipped away, pushing us further apart. I worry that people will underestimate how much it hurts, just because it’s been a long time. In my case, it actually hurts more now, I’m just used to living with the pain. It’s become part of who I am. It’s more of a dull ache rather than a sharp pain and it’s not so strange to have hanging over me like it used to be. Sometimes I see it as a scar – it’s always there and I can see where it hurt, I can see the damage that it’s caused but it’s no longer bleeding.
Understandably, on the 6th December, I used to stay at home and not go to school as I had a glimpse of the bigger picture and missing a day of school was just not important to me on a day like this. Someone I used to know once said “one day she needs to get over it” “what’s she going to do when she’s at work? She can’t just have time off all the time”. (sigh) I’m just glad that these types of people haven’t gone through such a horrible thing, to be able to know what it feels like. Over the years I’ve experienced lots of people concerning themselves over whether some of the things I would say were true, I don’t think any of them took the time to consider why I might be lying. In my case, the truth hurt too much to talk about. For years I lied when people asked if I had siblings or not because I was too embarrassed to tell people what the reality was: I was coming home to a very empty house after Ben had died and I didn’t want people to think I was lonely. Thankfully, my brother brought lots of people into our lives that acted as family members throughout my childhood, so if we put it in those terms, I technically have a family with over two hundred loving and kind people in it!
I hope this post shows that it’s okay to be unhappy or upset, whatever day it is, no matter where you’re “supposed” to be, regardless of what other people apparently expect of you or are saying. I hope that with this post, lots of you will be reminded that Christmas can be a really tough time for some people, even if they appear to be perfectly fine on social media. Christmas doesn’t have to be “the most wonderful time of the year” for everyone. Don’t feel that you have to force yourself to smile just because everyone around you might be. It’s okay to tell people and talk about it, no matter what time it is.ย You can do what you want with your grief and those that aren’t willing to support that, aren’t worth keeping around.ย Be kind and be nice, as you never know what someone is going through behind closed doors.
Although this is a sad story, I hope some of you have learned a bit more about me, as Ben was and still is a huge part of who I am today.
You guys seemed to really love my Autumnal candles post, as it proved to be my most viewed! I thought I would follow up with a Winter candles post as this is my favourite time of year to stock up on candles and have cosy days in with flat smelling as festive asย Whoville.
I have already shared my love for DW Home candles and I’m afraid there is only more love to come! I am also including a candle by Sand + Fog, a company that claims to be inspired by “the California coast” who also sell beautifully scented candles around this time of year. Their online shop is still in the making, however, I am able to buy their candles from Homesense or TK Maxx.
This first candle, Christmas Morningย has got to be my favourite candle that they’ve produced so far (which is saying something). It smells of sweet roasted coffee with hints of vanilla. It’s such an incredible smell, it’s perfect for a cosy day in! It’s honestly good enough to eat! The packaging is also gorgeous, which makes it nice to have on display at home.
Tobacco Noiris a candle I actually bought for my boyfriend but seems to have found its way into the living room with the others. DW Home seem to sell this candle all year round. The candle gives off the most amazing combination of smells; vanilla musk and subtle tobacco and topped with tonka beans which adds a scent similar to Woodruff. The Sand and Fog candle is also amazing and smells of white cranberry. I love berry scented candles for Christmas as they’re so festive and warming for Winter!
The sparkling champagne candle is incredible! There seem to be candles everywhere with prosecco or champagne in them for Christmas and I am very happy to comply with this trend! It smells so tangy and sweet, it’s perfect for freshening up the room after some cooking or even before you have friendsย over for drinks. The packaging is so beautiful and sparkly! I definitely will have to find a use for this pot once the candle has disappeared, it’s too pretty to throw away.
Snow Dayย is a beautifully fresh scent, with rich hints of peppermint and spearmint. There’s definitely some Winter berries in there too which makes it another festive must haveย for your candle collection.
Peppermint Snow smells like heaven. It has fresh undertones of Eucalyptus and spearmint too which reminds me of candy canes! I love the packaging for this candle too, it looks so adorable, in a kitsch sort of way, which I’m all for. White Christmasย is another super minty and fresh candle. It’s so sparkly and pretty to look at, I love lighting this candle when I have people come over as it always catches their eye and makes the flat smell so delicious!
I can’t believe it’s already Day Five of Blogmas?! I hope you guys enjoyed this post, let me know if you did in the comments as there’s plenty more of where this came from! I’ll be back tomorrow with another post for Blogmas Day 6!
I mentioned in my Halloween post that Nottingham embraces the festivities like there’s no tomorrow. There’s a Winter Wonderland Christmas market every year and I absolutely love it. The market is typically made up of lots of little wooden huts (Santa’s grotto-esque) which sell all kinds of goodies. There’s definitely something for everyone. This year it’s even bigger and better.
So they only went and built the ‘sur-la-piste’ bar, which is basically a double-deckedย (GASP) French ski lodge, which is super cosy and lively if you fancy a drink with some friends or even just somewhere warm to run to when you become a bit too chilly. The bar plays Christmas music all day and then switches to an electric violinist on Friday and Saturday evenings! For the beer lovers amongst you, the bar is the first in Nottingham to serve unpasteurised beer (no added chemicals – pure lager) from oldest distillery in Europe!ย You can grab yourself some mulled wine and kick back and watch the world go by or embarrass everyone you know whilst dancing to an exotic cover of Sam Smith, the choice is yours!
There are interesting foods and gifts to be found all over the place, including a tea shop this year that sells amazing flavours of, (at the risk of blowing your minds) teas – including a “Sweet Vanilla Shortbread”, “Ginger Cranberry” and “Sweet Rosehip Cinnamon”. These are all available to buy here as well. This year there are lots of traders selling award-winning Chutneys, Cheeses and Chocolates which make great stocking fillers! There are fabulous gift stalls filled with handmade jewellery and Christmas decorations and even Lego themed artwork and so much more. There’s nothing quite like giving someone you love something special and handpicked by you with them in mind, of which there is plenty to choose from! There’s also a beautiful stall selling relaxation themed products with lots of mood lights and candles (see below).
In terms of food, there’s a lot to show you. I previously spoke about my beloved chocolate covered marshmallows and here they are once again! They have so many flavours, including Toblerone, Cappucino and Rum & Raisin! You even can grab a box of twelve for ten pounds and give them as a gift, I am obsessed with these!
Here’s some more for those of you with a sweet tooth there’s plenty more available! The sweet stalls are probably my favourite as they’re so vibrant and colourful, it’s hard not to stop and stare to take it all in! There’s so much variety! The mini pancakes (below) were AMAZING and opting for a topping of strawberries and Nutella might have been the best choice I’ve made. I don’t think I’ve ever seen so much fudge in my life either, there areย all kinds of flavours, from Skittles to Salted Caramel. It’s worth checking out, even if it’s just for a photo of the mountains of sugary goodness! There are Crepes, Pick ‘n’ Mix, Candy Floss, Toffee Apples, Giant Chocolate Muffins…the list goes on.
Your choices for savoury food are also endless. There are stalls selling delicious traditional British Hot Dogs, Honey Roast Ham served with juicy pineapple, Corn on the Cob, German fried potatoes, Homemade Olives, Stews…and that’s only a fraction of whats available! There are stands dedicated to covering your delicacies in all kinds of sauces, offering a wide range of toppings and side dishes. For those that have not mastered the art of walking and eating simultaneously (me), seated dining is available inside the bar area where lots more foods and drinks are served.
For the children (or those still in touch with their inner child – me again) There are lots of stalls with fairground games where you can win yourself a giant elf or there’s the Helter Skelter that kids can zoom down whilst one of the three bars remains festive and jolly below. Possibly the most popular and certainly the biggest attraction at the market is the ice skating rink, where you can glide around a giant and beautifully lit tree to festive tunes with your friends and family. Although I’m practically like Bambi on ice, it was worth it for the amount we laughed!
The choices are endless and it’s such a special experience, the perfect way to get into the festive spirit and do some Christmas shopping! I would highly recommend checking the Nottingham Winter Wonderland out, especially for those looking for a city break before Christmas. Don’t miss out!
December has arrived! I still don’tย know how it’s rolled around so quickly, I feel like I blinked and half of the year has been and gone. Christmas can be quite a stressful, there’s so much to organise – buying presents for family and arranging where to place the twiglets on the snack table is already enough to deal with let alone finding and putting up a tree. When it comes to getting your home festive, it can be another added stress, especially when you consider how expensive decorations can be. However, do not fear, I can show you how to buy and decorate a tree for exactly ยฃ30.50 and I can assure you it won’t look like the homemade disaster you’re probably picturing.
So here we have it, people, the answer is an artificial tree. (I’ll get it out the way now) A warning for those out there that buy real Christmas trees religiously every year. Although a real fir tree is apparentlyย the epitome of festivity, in my opinion, it’s a nightmare. The thought of finding the right one, paying a small fortune and being able to bring it home, clean up after it and then do the same thing year after year just isn’t an appealing prospect. So I personally feel artificial trees are the way forward, as you don’t have to pay an arm and a leg and it isn’t so high maintenance. Also, even if you do buy a more pricey artificial tree, it’s reusable so you get your money’s worth year after year. Back at home, my family has used the same one since I was a toddler and it looks just as good! You have to tweak the branches and fill any gaps with decorations but that’s super easy.
Believe it or not,ย this treeย is from Tesco, and only cost ยฃ20. I share a flat with my boyfriend so we split the cost, so technically it only cost a tenner which if I may say so myself is a pretty good deal. I literally typed into google “artificial tree” and it was one of the first ones listed. There were some different heights and some were pre-lit however we knew 6ft was just about right and we were able to buy fairy lights cheaply elsewhere. It was so simple to set up and only took about ten minutes! The gold beaded tree garland came from Poundworld and cost ยฃ2. The red and gold tinsel cost ยฃ1 and this came from Poundland (what a surprise).
In terms of decorations practically everywhere sells them now not just trusty John Lewis and M&S. I found some amazing decorations in pound shops (what a surprise, they really should sponsor me). Even Primark is selling some fabulous decorations in all sorts of colours. We decided to make the colour theme gold and red, as we wanted it to warm up our living room. We decided to mainly focus on baubles as the larger ones can really make a statement and the smaller ones are perfect for filling any areas looking a bit sparse.
So from left to right, 24 x Gold baubles ยฃ1.50 8 x Red baubles ยฃ1 24 x Red baubles ยฃ1.50 (Front/Centre) 18 x Mini gold baubles ยฃ1
18PK of felt hanging decorations ยฃ1.50
I don’t believe the job is done without adding some of these to my tree, I feel like they’re so traditional and sweet I definitely couldn’t miss them out, this pack of 12 cost ยฃ1!
So in total, we paid ยฃ30.50 (ยฃ15.25 each) for a tree and all of the decorations (74 baubles, garland, tinsel and hanging decorations) which will all be ready again for us next year! Which goes to show how much you can get with your money even when budgets are tight with Christmas getting closer. I hope this was interesting to my fellow bargain hunters out there and helped save those struggling with any last minute Christmas decoration buying!
