AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE

BLOGMAS DAY 24

So, we have reached the end of my first ever Blogmas! I’m so so so glad that I took part as it’s taught me so much about the world of blogging but also about myself. I’ve learned that I actually have a lot more confidence than I thought I had.

I started this blog in September and I didn’t share it with anyone at first – the thought terrified me. I was scared I would be judged or laughed. Writing the post about my brother (it’s here if you want to give it a read) taught meย  to be true to myself and not to be afraid of being judged by other people. The support that I received in response was so overwhelming. In my first ever blog post, I talked about how blogs and youtube channels have helped me in dark and difficult times in my life and that I was hoping to achieve something similar in my own writing, soย I was incredibly moved by how many people said that it had helped them.

This little world that I have created also helps me too. I’ve always loved writing and expressing my opinion and being able to do this whenever I want to, about whatever I choose makes me super happy. I’m so glad so many of you have enjoyed my posts and that it continues to help and entertain all you lovely people out there! Your support honestly means the world to me.

To my girl tribe back at uni, thank you all so much for being avid readers and for even sharing them with your friends and family! Benjamin, you absolute star – thank you so much for putting up with my blogging breakdowns and typing tantrums and for helping me plan my posts and for being so supportive with everything that I do!

I hope that you all have a wonderful Christmas a very happy New Year and that you get to spend lots of time with people that you love. Speaking of which I can sense a growing panic in the kitchen as dinner is nearly ready, so I should probably go and assist my parents!

Lots and lots of love N xxxx

I HEART REVOLUTION: MINT CHOCOLATE PALETTE – REVIEW SWATCHES & PHOTOS

BLOGMAS DAY 23:

You guys seemed to enjoy reading my review of Tam Beauty’sย I Heart Revolution Golden Bar palette so I thought I would take a look at another in the collection.ย If you don’t already know about Tam Beauty, I’ve written about them before in some other reviews that I will link below!ย Long story short they’reย  cruelty free and based in the UK. They’re kind of an umbrella brand for Makeup Revolution, I Heart Makeup, Freedom and some others too. Today I’m testing out the Mint Chocolate palette, also from Tam Beauty’s I Heart Makeup brand. Enjoy!

Processed with VSCO with c2 preset

Processed with VSCO with c2 presetThe Mint Chocolate palette, like the others in the collection, features the amazing chocolate bar packaging, this time with a fluorescent light green and a dark brown base. Immediately this was a throwback for me! As a little girl I always used to get mint choc chip ice cream, it was my absolute favourite – the colours are spot on. It will cost you ยฃ8.99 – or in other words, a bargain.

Processed with VSCO with c2 preset

Processed with VSCO with c2 presetA lot of people have said this palette is very similar to the Anastasia Beverly Hills Subculture palette (I’ve also reviewed this) with it’s autumnal selection of shades, oranges, coppers and reds galore! I wish I had been using this through October/November as the colours are perfect for that time of year. The palette is mainly muted and warm however, there’s also some pops of colour, a bright yellow and a shimmery green. The palette includes 9 foils/shimmers and 7 mattes. I think it’s such a unique combination of colours which makes me even more excited to mess around with it. It seems there was an attempt to make it smell of peppermint but it actually kind of smells medicinal. Don’t worry though, it’s not really strong it’s just when you stick your nose in up close.

IMG_1403

So here’s the first row…

  • Sugarcoated: A light champagne-gold foil/shimmer –ย Perfect for halo looks or inner corners. It’s super creamy but it takes a couple of goes to pick up a lot of pigment.
  • Engaged: A prosecco meets brown foil/shimmer –ย Super pretty and pigmented. It was easy to pick this one up and swatch it. I reckon this would look lovely all over the lid.
  • Tea: A pink-brown matte – I use this as a transition shade as it’s so simple and blends beautifully. It’s creamy and although subtle, it’s buildable.
  • Lust: A blue to brown foil/shimmer –ย This might be my favourite shade in the palette, it’s so unique and I’ve never owned a shadow like this (it really reminds me of the shade ‘Petrol‘ in the Soph x Palette which I reviewed a couple of days agoย if you fancy having a peek)
  • Poison Ivy: A dark forest green matte –ย This is the shade I’m most disappointed with. It’s very patchy (you can see if you look closely in the photo) and I struggled to swatch it let alone blend it on my lids. It’s definitely buildable you just have to put some more work into this one.

    IMG_1413

The second row…

  • Secret: A rich warm brown matte – I love this shade, it’s really creamy feeling and it is great for warm smokey eye looks which I do all the time.
Worlds Apart: A red matte with pink and purple undertones –ย This one felt slightly more chalky but it still swatched well after I applied a couple of layers. I would most likely use this for autumnal looks but probably for festive ones too as it’s so rich and warm.
  • Distorted: A copper foil/shimmer with orange undertones –ย I am a sucker for anything gold or copper and this immediately lured me in.ย  The quality of this shade, keeping in mind it’s in a palette sold in drugstores, is INSANE. It’s so pigmented and gorgeously creamy.
  • Rivals: An emerald green foil/shimmer –ย This shadow isn’t as creamy as Distortedย and it’s slightly chalky/powdery feeling but it’s so pigmented and it still applies and blends really well. It’s the perfect shimmery green for festive makeup looks as there’s definitely some flecks of gold in it too!
  • Interupted: A cup of tea brown/nude matte –ย (Yes it’s spelt without a double ‘r’ so I’m not sure if this is a typo on the palette or intentional) So far I’ve used this as a transition shade in the crease or as a base for other shadows. It’s very soft and creamy feeling and it’s buildable too if you want it to stand out a little bit more. It’s just a bit too similar to my skin tone so it doesn’t show up that much on me.

Compromise: A brown foil/shimmer – At first I didn’t find this to be that pigmented but after another layer it was gorgeous. The texture was creamy as well which I love as it just makes applying and blending so much easier. I like that this is a warm toned shimmer too – right up my street!

IMG_1414
The third and final row…

  • Awaken: A dark chocolate brown matte –ย Just like Poison Ivyย I found this to be quite patchy but after a little bit more work it was okay. It’s warm toned too which I’m all about.
  • Disturbance: A bright yellow-gold foil/shimmer – Super pigmented and such a cool unique shade, I’ve never owned a bright yellow before either so I’m going to enjoy experimenting with this.
  • Commotion: A turquoise blue foil/shimmer – Turquoise is my favourite colour anyway so I immediately fell in love with this shade when I saw it.
  • High Standards: A champagne-pink nude foil/shimmer – Another pigmented shadow, perfect for halo looks and inner corner highlights. It’s so delicate and pretty looking.

Confession: A pinky-white matte – I’ve been using this as a base after I apply primer/concealer to my lid as it just doesn’t show up that well on me. However, it definitely brightens up my eyes no matter what I’m using it for.

In conclusion, it’s a great palette for the amount that you pay. No, not all of the shades are perfect in one swatch but it is after all, ยฃ8.99 so I can understand why this isn’t the case. However, every shade is buildable and can be as intense as you want it to be which makes up for any initial patchiness or lack of immediate pigment. I love the mix of shimmers and mattes which means I can take this palette anywhere and use it for a whole look on it’s own and the inclusion of a massive mirror helps with making it really travel-friendly too. I would recommend this palette to anyone looking to experiment with some coloured eyeshadows or if you would use this kind of palette every day. It’s only ยฃ8.99 so if you reckon it’s your kind of thing it’s not a terrifyingly priced product. If you already have this or are planning on buying it, let me know where you stand as I would love to know.

THE CHRISTMAS TAG

BLOGMAS DAY 22

I’ve always loved reading people’s tag posts because I think they tell you a lot about a person and they’re always fun to read. I thought I would take part as I’ve never done one before so here you are, enjoy!

1. What is your favourite Christmas Movie/s?

I hate to be extremely predictable, but it’s got to be Love, Actually. I bloody love this film, it hits all the emotions and it’s such a feel good film. I don’t feel like it’s Christmas without watching it. Gotta love a bit of Colin Firth, Hugh Grant and Emma Thompson – not to mention Alan Rickman too.

2.ย Do you open your presents on Christmas Eve or Christmas morning?

We like to save the excitement for Christmas Day! I don’t think I’ve ever opened a present on Christmas Eve, it felt like there was a rule that shouldn’t be broken. I can remember being little and waking up in the middle of the night to find my stocking at the end of my bed, the temptation was unbearable. I remember poking my presents,ย trying to figure out what they were.

3. Do you have a favourite Christmas memory?

I remember sleeping in my brother’s room in a sleeping bag on his bedroom floor (our first sleepover) and in the morning we were opening our stockings and I got some little desks and lockers for my Barbie dolls. I’d wanted to play ‘schools’ with my dolls and now I could! – It’s the small things for 6 year old Nina haha!

4. Favourite festive food?

I’m aware these are around all year however there’s nothing like scoffing a box of Lindt chocolate truffles on Christmas Day – alone (no sharing whatsoever thank you). I’ve always loved pigs in blankets though, my mouth is watering just thinking about them. Recently I’ve also started enjoying festive inspired crisps. If you’re wondering what I’m on about, check out M&S for some very interesting combinations.

5. Favourite Christmas gift?

I have a few. First I have to say my Playmobil Hospital. I picked this with my parents and they hid it upstairs and I remember sitting in front of it every night and staring at it – I was so unbelievably excited. Another doll-related gift, I received a boy Bratz doll and I was over the moon. It was so difficult finding boy dolls anywhere so this was a groundbreaking moment for Nina’s doll collection.ย  Another fond memory I have, I must’ve been pretty young, I was given a ‘Grease’ (as in the musical) handbag which I took everywhere with me as I was obsessed with the film. OBSESSED. I used to watch it every morning and pause it before school only to come back home and continue watching it from that point. My poor family probably didn’t fancy listening to ‘Summer Nights’ that frequently. Soz guys x

6. Favourite Christmas scent?

It’s got to be peppermint. I know it’s not particularly traditional but I’m loving it at the moment, it reminds me of candy canes! I find the traditional Christmas spice scent quite overpowering so I don’t tend to buy anything that smells of it. I have a couple of posts where I talk about my favourite festive candles so check them out here and here if you’re interested!

7. Do you have any Christmas Eve traditions?

We usually have something yummy to eat and we watch whatever festive shows that the BBC has to offer or we tune into a Christmas classic. At some point we usually watch something animated (Dreamworks or Pixar). Shrek the Halls is one of my favourites actually.

8. What tops your tree?

My brother made a little purple angel made from paper with a photo of his face on it when he was at school so it’s usually that. We have two trees and the other one doesn’t do a great job of supporting a star so I try and distract with lots of decorations instead.

9. As a kid what was the one (crazy, wild,ย extravagant) gift you always asked for but never received?

I don’t really remember asking for anything too nuts but I’m sure when I was really little and I thought anything was possible – I probably asked for all sorts.

10. What’s the best part about Christmas for you?

Cringey I know, but I’ve always loved giving people presents. My mum always gave me lots of little bits to open on birthdays and for Christmas as opposed to one or two big things. I always thought this was better and more exciting, I still do. So I enjoy all of the shopping and buying presents for friends and family. I feel like that little kid from the John Lewis advert haha! Another fab part of Christmas is of course, the huge sales. NEW CLOTHES AND MAKEUP YAY!

Feel free to answer these questions yourselves as I would love to hear about your Christmas traditions and favourites!

MY FAVOURITE PODCASTS

BLOGMAS DAY 17

This year I have really enjoyed listening to and discovering new podcasts. For anyone unsure of what I mean, a podcast is a digital audio file that’s available on the Internet that you can download on your phone/computer/tablet and many other devices. Usually, they’ll be available as a series that you can subscribe to. It’s kind of like an audio-Netflix. They’re so simple and easy to use, especially on the train, whilst walking into town or even to fall asleep to.

I thought I would share some of my favourites with you!

TO MAKE YOU LAUGH:

My Dad Wrote A PornoJamie Morton reads a chapter a week from the erotic novels that his 60-year-old father has written. His friends James Cooper and Radio 1‘sย Alice Levine join him.ย If the thought of your parents even thinking about sex is enough to make you shudder this podcast takes the humiliation one step further. In each episode, Jamie expresses his feelings about his father’s erotic fiction saga, Belinda Blinked.ย His father, Rocky Flintstone (yes that is his pen name) shares the lecherous adventures of Belinda Blumenthal, a pots and pans saleswoman (the most random career title I’ve ever heard). This podcast is truly the funniest thing I have ever listened to, it actually makes me laugh out loud in public. There’s currently 3 series available, however, we were treated to, “My Dad Wrote A Christmas Porno 2” which has just been dropped, apparently involving a festive skiing trip. There’s laughing fits, confusion, and of course an understandable amount of ranting from Jamie. The three fabulously witty millennials are currently on tour and you can grab yourself tickets here!

Fridayย Night Comedy from BBC Radio 4 “The Now Show”Steve Punt and Hugh Dennis along with many other guests treat us to hysterical comedy sketches and satirical commentary galore. This is another podcast that has me laughing out loud. I love the intelligent nature of the jokes and the speediness of each comedy sketch, it’s like being at a live show. The hosts frequently poke fun at politicians and celebrities, making it relatable, relevant and topical.

FOR A CALMING HOUR OF INSPIRATION:

At Home With… – This is one of my favourite podcasts to chill out and listen to. It’s hosted by Lily Pebbles and Anna Newton, two lifestyle content creators, and together they visit the homes of people they admire. Each episode is recorded in a different person’s home, where you get to find out all sorts about them and what inspired them to design their home the way that they did. Some people that they have featured in the podcast include Zoe Suggย (Zoella), Liz Earle, and Giovanna Fletcher!

THOUGHT PROVOKING:

Ted Talks Dailyย Every weekday, this podcast delivers the most fascinating ideas on absolutely every subject imaginable. I’ve heard talks about Architecture, 10 Ways to have a better conversation and artificial intelligence! The talks are usually given by the world’s foremost thinkers and opinion leaders. You find yourself learning about things you never even knew existed on your everyday commute. It’s such a fantastic idea, I strongly recommend giving this one a go.

Desert Island Discsย  Kirsty Young asks her guests to choose, 8 tracks, a book, and a luxury, what would they take to a desert island? Some of this podcasts fabulous guests include Ed Sheeran, David Beckham, Sue Perkins and Bruce Springsteen. Kirsty talks to her guests about their lives and what the reasons are behind their musical, literary and luxury selections. I love this podcast as it gives you a bit of detail behind the public personas and a chance to find something out that you didn’t already know.

Stuff You Should Knowย Hosts Chuck (Charles Bryant) and Josh Clark explore a vast range of topics, from how population works to how much money there is in the world. It’s a fascinating listen and I would strongly recommend giving it a go as you can learn so much in such a short space of time! Not only does this wonderful podcast give you creative conversation starters, it also gives you an insight into how the world works.

Do let me know if you also enjoy any of these podcasts or if you have any other suggests for me as I’m always looking for something new to listen to!

HOPING FOR A WHITE CHRISTMAS? … A COLD CHRISTMAS?

BLOGMAS DAY 16:

I recently visited Edinburgh with my boyfriend. One thing I didn’t talk about in my post, was the number of homeless people I saw. I felt so helpless, as many of us do, debating as to whether I should give them money or not, uncertain as to how they might spend that money. So how can you know, for sure, where the money is going? One way is to buy some food or water and just hand it to them with a few kind words. In doing this, I have had some amazing conversations with people over a sandwich and a hot chocolate. If you don’t feel this is something you can do, for whatever reason, here’s something you might consider.

StreetLink

There is an app called StreetLink, which “exists to help end rough sleeping”. It enables any member of the public to connect local support services and those who are sleeping on the streets. This is what you need to do. It’s straightforward. It’s easy.

Here’s how it works:

If you pass someone who is sleeping rough in England or Wales and this concerns you, you can send an alert to StreetLink. You can alert theย local authority or local outreach service so that they can findย the person you have seen and give them the support that they need. All you have to do is say where and when you have seen the person and include some simple details like gender, age, clothing etc.ย Within 10 days, if you wish, you will receive details of any action taken by the local authority, in response to your alert.

STREETLINK SCREENSHOTS.jpg

There’s no risk, there’s no commitment, there is no further responsibility on your part.ย Yes, it’s that easy and the app is free. Doing what I’ve described above will not cost you a penny, but, why not also donate to help this fantastic organisationย here.

Why not let this be your Christmas donation this year?ย

Download it and start helping a homeless person now.

I would find it heartwarming to hear of anything you do, so please do share it in a comment.

Let’s do this together. Let’s make a difference.

SOAP AND GLORY REVIEW – MY FAVES

BLOGMAS DAY 15:โ€‹

Today I’m talking about one of my favouriteย beauty brands,ย Soap and Glory. Given thatย Christmas is fast approaching, I couldn’t think of a better time to let you all know what this fabulous brand has in stock, just in time for some last minute buying of stocking fillers. Soap and Glory always have the most gorgeous gift sets at this time of year too which make perfect Christmas presents!

I have always been sucked in by anything pink or gimmicky, let alone an entire wall of it (in some boots stores – SOS from my bank account). That’s how I got into Soap and Glory products, I was lured in by their gorgeous packaging.ย When I first noticed Soap and Glory’s products in my local Boots store, they were mainly selling body lotions and hand lotions. The range is now absolutely huge compared to what it was a few years ago and I couldn’t be happier about this!

Over the years I have developed a strong love for all things Soap and Glory and I thought Iย would share my favourite products with you!

Processed with VSCO with c1 preset

Let’s talk moisturisers…

VSCO Cam-2-1.jpgArguably, Soap and Glory are most well known for their body lotions and rightly so! I absolutely love covering myself in moisturisers, especially at this time of year. I always feel so smooth and soft and I smell bloody fab after using these products.

The Righteous Butter Body Lotionย (travel size) – ยฃ2.50 – This is probably Soap and Glory’s most well-known scent, with Shea Butter and Aloe Vera. It smells so good. On the back of the tube, you are asked to “Butter the devil you know” (typical puns from Soap and Glory)ย and especially pay attention to rougher spots.ย I love keeping this in my bag and suitcase for whenever I travel or stay anywhere. It makes me feel so pampered and leaves me soft and moisturised.

Hand Food Hand Creamย (travel size) – ยฃ2.50 – Another of their legendary products, the Hand Food hand cream is one of my favourites. During Winter I get particularly dry hands so I absolutely love keeping this in my bag for on the go use. The hand cream contains Shea Butter and Macadamia oil AND marshmallow (gasp) it smells incredible. It’s fragranced with Soap and Glory’s signature scent of Rose and bergamot. Unlike lots of hand creams that I’ve tried before now, it isn’t sticky or greasy – which is a must for me in glove wearing season.

Hand Food Hand Cream Pump – ยฃ7 – Although having the travel size version of this gorgeous hand cream is perfect for on the go, I do like to keep the pump one in my bathroom for more heavy duty use. Again it’s fragranced with rose and bergamot (heaven on earth).

Heel Genius Foot Cream – ยฃ5.50 –ย I used to dance pretty much every day of the week and with that came gross feet. I was in desperate need of moisture and this became my solution! It features orange and lemon fruit acid, bilberry, menthol, macadamia oil, glycerin and allantoin which is the perfect combo for tackling feet as dry as sandpaper. Try it, your feet will thank you later!

Sugar Crush Body Buttercream – ยฃ10 – Sugar Crush is my absolute FAVOURITE scent by Soap and Glory. This body lotion is fragranced with lime oil, kiwi juice water, and lime tree blossom extract which makes it perfect for waking you up in the morning as it’s just so refreshing and zingy. I tend to slather this on after a shower or a bath and it keeps me feeling soft and smooth for the rest of the day. Of course, it’s loaded with moisturisingย sweet almond oil and coconut oil and shea and cocoa butter.ย You also get a generous amount of product and for ยฃ10 I think that’s a great deal.

Moving on to my favourite bath and shower goodies…

VSCO Cam-1-9.jpgClean On Me Shower Gelย – ยฃ6.50 – I usually have a bottle of thisย in stock somewhere in my bathroom. I just loveย the clean and fresh scent of this shower gel, which contains mandarin peel extract. It smells divine and it makes me feel so pampered and silky soft after my shower. You can smell it on your skin hours later which is a bonus plus ยฃ6.50 is such a great price for a huge 500ml bottle – go grab it!

(They’ve actually changed the name of this) to Scrub of Your Life Body Scrubย – ยฃ7 –ย It smells so fresh and clean!ย This scrub is so creamy and thick and it’s packed with scrubbing beads so that you can exfoliate to your heart’s desire.

VSCO Cam-2-6.jpgThe Rushower Scentsational Dry Shampoo – ยฃ4 – My mum gave me this for my birthday and I am so glad that she did, it’s a lifesaver! I usually Batiste’s dry shampoos, however, I have always hated how rough they make my hair feel and how difficult they are to blend out into my hair without it looking like I’ve gone grey or I’ve got suspiciously widespread dandruff. Rushower, leaves my hair feeling silky smooth and it blends into my roots like a dream, absorbing any gross oils with it. It also smells incredible with mandarin, rose and bergamot – erm yes please? You can smell it for hours after you sprayed it as well, which I love.

VSCO Cam-3-2.jpgSugar Crush Body Spray – ยฃ4 – I was so happy when Soap and Glory created this spray as it’s already my favourite scent that they’ve done.ย It’s fragranced with lemon oil and Elemi oil which I find to be so refreshing in the morning before I go to university. There’s also elements of vanilla, ginger, sweet lime and smashed brown sugar which is simply a drool-worthy combination. It’s like they bottled happiness. Go and have a sniff and let me know if you love it as much as I do!

VSCO Cam-1-10.jpgNo Clogs Allowed – ยฃ11.50 – No apologies for the well-loved appearance of this one – I just love it so much. It’s perfect for a pamper night once a week (I mean I have one every day if possible, oops) when your skin needs resurrecting. I always apply it in my problem areas (on my face of course) and I let it do its thing for about 10-15 minutes. I have definitely noticed a huge difference after using this mask. I have tried all kinds in my time yet this one just continues to impress me.

ย If you haven’t tried anything out by Soap and Glory yet, I honestly can’t recommend their products highly enough! Not only are all of the products of suchย high quality but the packaging that they come in is simply gorgeous and are usually a glimpse at their fab sense of humourย with gimmicky names and play on words. All of the scents are amazing too, I am yet to dislike one! Usually, around this time of year, there are lots of offers on their products, so stock up now! Let me know if you have any Soap and Glory favourites too, I’m always looking for an excuse to buy more of their products!

PAPERGANG NOVEMBER 2017: ALLISON BLACK REVIEW

BLOGMAS DAY 14

WHO CREATED PAPERGANG?

Ohh Deer, a company I have SO much love for,ย was founded in order to allow illustrators and artists to showcase their work and find people that would be interested in buying their designs. The company sells the most amazing quirky and arty products – I simply can’t get enough. I love the fact that Ohh Deer offers artists the opportunity to get noticed and therefore get something back for all their hard work that otherwise we might not have seen. Some of their clients include Paperchase, ASOS, John Lewisย andย Oliver Bonas (my all-time favourite shop) and some of their collections have been specifically designed for the Tate Galleries and the Science Museum!

WHAT IS PAPERGANG?

Ohh Deerย decided to create a monthly subscription service for stationery addicts, such as myself called,ย Papergang!ย Each month you will receive a box filled with brilliant papery goodies and desk accessories. Some examples are notebooks, greeting cards, wrapping paper and art prints. It costsย ยฃ10.95 and then a ยฃ2.95 for shipping which in my opinion, after receiving their boxes, is a great deal. Every box has a different design and theme by a different artist and for every 4 boxes, 1 tree is planted in partnership with the fantastic charity, Tree aid. To find out more about their connection with this charity here.

I am a huge stationary addict and this subscription box is probably my favourite out of the many I am a part of. I always look forward to opening my box every month and using all my new bits and pieces! Most of the products you receive are exclusive the Papergang subscribers for a while before they get sold in Ohh Deer’s shop.

VSCO Cam-2-4.jpg

This month’s box is all about the amazing charity ofย Battersea Dogs and Cats Homeย and it was illustrated by Allison Black. (Insta – @AllisonBlackIllustration). The packaging is so colourful and fun I absolutely love it.

So let’s take a look at the first product!

Processed with VSCO with c1 preset

Processed with VSCO with c1 presetSix Christmas Cards – ยฃ10

This month we were treated to SIX Christmas cards, all pet related. The card designs are so fun and unique, perfect for sending to family and friends who are animal lovers! The card with the grumpy looking cat is perfect for a friend I have, whose cat frequently gets caught in all of the fairy lights at Christmas! There’s also something adorable about a bulldog in a Christmas sweater, I love this design! However, my favourite has to be the Daschund cardย which I will be sending to my nan as she has a little sausage dog and I reckon this will make her smile. There’s also an offer on – buy 2 cards and get the 3rd one free.

VSCO Cam-8-4.jpgNotebook – ยฃ7.95

ย I was most impressed when I spotted this ‘perfect bound’ A5 notebook. It’s thick too, with lined pages which I actually prefer to plane pages as I find it’s easier to make notes and keep everything organised and neat. Nice quality notebooks like this are usually quite expensive as well!

VSCO Cam-7-4.jpg2 x Gift Wrap – ย ยฃ3.50

I often find that buying sheets of wrapping paper can be expensive. In this month’s box, we received not one but TWO sheets of gift wrap and given the other items that we received as well, this box works out at incredibly good value. Each sheet is printed onto 100% recycled paper and is 50cm x 70cm.

Processed with VSCO with c1 presetGift Tags – ยฃ0.95

I love making presents look like I spent lots of time on them as I am quite a perfectionist with giftwrapping. I’ve started to love using ribbon and bows and so I was super excited to see three gift tags in this month’s box. Each label is 9.5cm x 4.5cm and some candy cane style (red and white) string was included to attach them with.

Once again, Papergang has really impressed me. These products are, as usual, of the highest quality. The illustrationsย on each product are super fun and creative, I will definitely be buying some more of Allison Black’s work! I love this month’s theme as I think Christmas is a great time for giving and helping out others – even if they have bark

If you’d like to buy this month’s box click here!

If you would like to subscribe, my invite is here!ย

BIRCHBOX DECEMBER 2017: MATTHEW WILLIAMSON – REVIEW

Birchbox isย a UK beauty subscription service that sends beauty boxes to their subscribers containing 5 goodies every month. You don’t have to worry about lifelong commitments or any contracts, you can cancel anytimeย with a monthly subscription – no fuss whatsoever! The monthly subscription costs only ยฃ10 per month! You can edit your beauty profile on their site in order to ensure you get sent products that are suitable for your skin/hair type and personal preferences. Birchbox is so great for discovering new brands and products. I have been subscribed to Birchbox for over a year now and I look forward to receiving their boxes every month.ย I’ve gone on to buy lots of the things I’ve received because I have loved them so much. Every box you receive is beautifully packaged, some months are designed and inspired by artists and companies. One month the box was created and designed in partnership with Oliver Bonasand I use it to store makeup in as it’s so beautiful!

VSCO Cam-1-5.jpg

This month, Birchbox teamed up with British fashion designer Matthew Williamson. The box is truly the epitome of luxe design and it’s so perfect for this time of year. I feel like December is a month that for some people, can be really stressful. Many seem to forget to take a minute to relax and pamper themselves and this box has definitely motivated me to do just that!

So let’s take a look at the first item…

NATURAL ROSE PIC 1.jpgvsco-cam-3-3.jpg(FULL SIZE) Pixi – Shea Butter Lip Balm in Natural Roseย : ยฃ8

I actually already own a Pixi Shea Butter Lip Balm in the shade Honey Nectarย which I love, so I was super excited when I saw another one in my December box! It adds the perfect amount of colour without drying my lips out completely, however for some reason I don’t feel like it’s as moisturising as my previous lip balm by Pixi. I would have liked a more nourishing product for this time of year as this is when my lips are chapping like there’s no tomorrow. I will definitely still use it, just not if my lips are in need of help.ย Natural Roseย is a gorgeous nude-pink shade, perfect for more natural looks. ย The packaging has a vintage feel to it which is adorable and it’s the perfect size to keep in your handbag.

BAIJA PARIS.jpgย Baรฏja ParisCaramelised Honey Body Scrub : ยฃ14.90ย (via theย Birchboxย shop)ย

I had never heard of this brand before but after looking on their website it’s clear that they sell lots of other beautiful products too.ย This body scrub smells INCREDIBLE, if you imagine freshly made caramel or fudge – something along those lines. It’s made up of 97% natural ingredients which I love as I feel it would be a real treat for my skin. It’s perfect for exfoliating and scrubbing away dry and dead skin to make you feel fresh and moisturised.ย I cannot wait to have a cosy pamper night in with this!

MODELCO PIC.jpgModelCoContour Stickย : ยฃ13 (via theย Birchboxย shop)

I am not blessed with chiseled cheeks so I’ll happily fake it until I make it. I was so happy to see this contour stick in my December box. For the last couple of years I have been completely hooked on the Barry M contour cream sticksย (which I will be including in my every day makeup items post – coming soon!) however, I’m so excited to try something new. The one that I currently use is quite cool toned which sometimes doesn’t work for a warm summery look. This product seems nice and warm toned which will be perfect for Summer and natural holiday makeup. I also love that the end is pointed which means contouring can be done with precision. When I was swatching the product I was surprised at how creamy it was and how well it blended! This is something I look for in contouring sticks as I’m not a fan of streaky cheeks and I like products that blend like a seamlessly. I use a dewy foundation and this would glide perfectly over it to create a healthy and glowing makeup look.

vsco-cam-15-1.jpgSand & SkyBrilliant Skin Purifying Clay Maskยฃ39.90

Is it just me or are there some strong Nip+ Fab vibes from this packaging? This product particularly caught my eye as I love a good face mask on pamper nights. The product is claimed to detox, invigorate and brighten your complexion (yes please). ย The main ingredient is pink Australian clay which apparently draws impurities out from the skin. The product also contains soothing aloe vera and pore tightening pomegranate.

VSCO Cam-11-2.jpgย (FULL SIZE)Spectrum CollectionsB04 Angled Blender Brushยฃ4.99

I practically squealed when I saw this brush poking out from beneath the other products. I always say you can never have too many blending brushes so this one will be going straight into my collection. I love that it’s angled so that you can be precise with your shadows. The colour of the brush also had me drooling as anything gold or rose gold always catches my eye and matches my aesthetic in my bedroom.

Overall I think this box is worth the money that I paid for it (ยฃ10) as the products are all very luxurious this month and there are two full sized products included which together have a total value of ยฃ13! Let me know if you are subscribed to Birchbox and what you thought of this box or if you are subscribed to any other beauty boxes, I would love to know!

Go ahead and use my link (here)ย to subscribe and you will get ยฃ5 off your first Birchbox!ย

WHAT UNIVERSITY HAS TAUGHT ME SO FAR

BLOGMAS DAY 10

It’s that time of year again where lots of students are beginning to consider whether they may want to go on and study at a university or take up an apprenticeship or even go on a gap year so I thought this post could help some of the undecided out there or help answer some of those random questions you have about life at university.ย University is one of those things that I wish I had known more about – from a students perspective before I suddenly just seemed to arrive. The lengthy processes of UCAS, personal statement writing and looking at entrance requirements is helpful, but it doesn’t give you a proper insight into university life.

BEING AWAY FROM HOME

I personally, couldn’tย wait to get away and experience something new (no offence mum and dad), however, some people can’t imagine anything worse than being away from their family or the comfort of their own home. Saying goodbye was hard but I was excited to meet my flatmates and move in properly so I was pretty distracted.ย The first few days felt so strange, I was suddenly with five other people in a flat all day every day and it was Freshers week so we were mostly going to different clubs every night, it kind of felt like a holiday! After a week of drinking way too much and consuming chicken nuggets at ungodly hours of the morning, it suddenly hit me that I was on my own. I didn’t have my dad knocking on my door in the morning to offer me a cup of tea and I didn’t have my mum to go to when something went wrong. It was terrifying.

Once the regular routine of uni kicked in I became used to it and by that point, I was much closer to everyone that I lived with so I was coming home to familiar and friendly faces every day. I definitely realised how much I appreciate all that my parents do for me as it’s very clear what life is like when they aren’t around as much (chaos). I found calling my parents when I was walking somewhere on my own or in the evenings when I was free was really comforting and it was nice to hear what they had been up to. I chose to go home once during the first term, for a weekend, which was easily arranged via trains. I also stuck photos of my parents and friends on one of my bedroom walls which wereย also nice on the more difficult days.

If you think you might struggle with homesickness, finding a source of comfort in advance will help just so that you are prepared. For example, look up how to travel from university to home (and back again) beforehand so that it’s easy for you to organise once you’re there. Try and find some nice photos of you and your friends or family that you could take with you to stick on your wall, in some photo frames or even in a scrapbook. Lots of people are in the same boat so don’t worry, missing home is totally normal.

FRIENDS

Keep your options open. This is where I think I’ve learned the most since starting university. I tend to put all my eggs in one basket and this is definitely one of my flaws. I rely too much on routine and not enough on spontaneity and this means that I shut myself away. I would definitely recommend trying to meet as many new people as possible in the first year as a couple of months into the first term, you’re likely to be choosing who you want to live with in the second year.

I would recommend joining societies, getting to know people on your course or even people that also live in your accommodation. You’d be surprised how many opportunities this opens up! You never know if the friend of a friend that you bump into in a lecture could be your best pal next year. My best friends at uni (yes girls, this is your moment if you’re reading) were my flatmate’s coursemate’s, flatmates, which goes to show that putting yourself out there and meeting new people can have its benefits, even if it is a little intimidating at first.

MAKING LIVING ARRANGEMENTS

This is where I would have told myself to be super careful as you think you know some people but the truth is it’s only been a few months. Don’t rush yourself, take your time to meet different people and get to know them. Don’t feel pressured into saying yes despite how early everyone may want to get it sorted. Don’t feel like you have to carry on living with everyone that you’re in a flat with in the first year, you got put here randomly and now you have a choice! Even if your decision might cause some problem to begin with, by the time you’ve actually moved in it will seem much more insignificant and you’ll barely even think about it. This is where my point about getting to know different people comes in handy.ย Realistically you have to think, “do I want to share a house with these people all day every day for another few years?” if you’re hesitant, then you probably shouldn’t rush this decision.

I chose to live with my boyfriend in second year, which was a huge step for me but I knew it would be the right one. He’s very calm and patient to be around and I get very anxious and stressed out easily, so he acts as a calming influence around our flat. I also quite like him anyway (funnily enough). We were originally going to share a flat with 12 people, which although tempting in terms of having a good laugh and there being lots of people around, it was too difficult to organise between us all and we didn’t know all of the people involved that well (if at all). Looking back on this, if it had gone ahead, it would have been pretty difficult to manage and certainly wouldn’t have been as peaceful as living together, just us two.

One night we were trying to find more options and I just ended up saying ย “the only two people that definitely know what they’re doing are me and you so why don’t we look at a place for just us two”. We went and viewed some properties and decided that was what we wanted to do! Just because I chose to live with one person doesn’t mean I’m left out or lonely, I make sure that I spend lots of time with my coursemates and my friends so that I’m busy and I don’t isolate myself.

INDEPENDENCE

Gone are the sheltered days of the classrooms and playgrounds.ย No matter how many talks I listened to at school, where they warned us about this that and the other, I was not prepared for the level of independence that came with first year. I arrived knowing how to (just about) cook the basics, work a washing machine, make my bed and iron clothes. I thought “oh I’ll be fine” NOPE. Apparently, the concept of regular food shops, budgeting, getting myself up and about in time for lectures, chasing myself for my own work in time for deadlines, had not properly registered in my brain. It was a real shock when the food my parents had bought me had ran out. I had to face the supermarket alone, and figure out all my meals in advance (like a normal grown-up person). There was no more mum telling me to “eat something!” or shouting from downstairs “I’m putting on a colours wash now!”, there was no “How much of that essay have you done for Friday” from my teachers. It was all down to me. I may seem like I’m stating the obvious, but when these little reminders and important people that had been guiding me my whole life were suddenly gone, I had to figure out where to go next.

FOOD

It’s easy to get caught up in all the excitement and buy yourself pringles for weeks on end but it will definitely creep up on you when you’re trying to fight the cold that everyone in your flat has a few weeks later. I put on weight last year and somehow I was confused as to how this had happened. Perhaps pasta, pizza and chicken nuggets are not the ideal diet for a student…

When I started having proper meals at normal times, I noticed SUCH difference in terms of my energy and how productive I would be in a day. It’s definitely something you have to learn yourself, as I will admit, the constant 2 for 1 student offer on Dominos pizza here in the UK had me thinking a greasy margarita would be a sufficient meal in a day. Every week. Every month. WRONG!

I would recommend taking a cookbook to uni with some easy recipes to follow to allow for some variety in your cooking. There’s also an app called Tasty, that I reviewed in my last post which has some quick and easy recipes to follow (in video format). I found shopping in Aldi last year was the best way to save money and still have really good food in the fridge. The savings are unbelievable when you compare to other leading supermarkets. You don’t have to buy everything here, but perhaps for the more regular bits and pieces, like milk, cheese, pasta etc, this is the place to be!

MONEY

This is perhaps the most discussed topic of uni students: “I’m broke”, “I just don’t know where all my money has gone” “I’m in my overdraft”. How do these numpties manage this, you may ask? It’s easier said than done.

Students are constantly being lured in with student discounts left, right and centre. You think you’re saving money but actually, you’re spending more than you would’ve done in the first place. There’s also so much going on, that you might feel you have to take part in everything so maybe treat yourself once or twice a week so that you don’t go overboard.

Keep an eye on your weekly spendings. Do a weekly food shop and add up how much you’ve spent. Make this your budget and try and stick to it for the rest of the year. Some weeks will be different to others if there’s a birthday night out, if you’re going out for dinner instead or if you don’t need as much one week, but try not to let it change drastically.

Keep on top of how much you spend on clothes and makeup or toiletries. There will be lots of discounts available – there’s even a student lock-in night in Nottingham (dangerous for any bank account let alone when a shopaholic such as myself is let loose) so either set aside some money for these bits every week/month or only grab some bits every now and again, do whatever suits you.

Try to limit how much money you take on nights out. This is often where lots of people mess up as they take their card, meaning they can spend as much money as they want. Only having cash on you, means you can only spend a certain amount and then you’re all out.

Do not, I repeat DO NOT get an overdraft if you cannot pay it back.ย A lot of people see it as free money, which it’s not, you still have to pay every last penny back. Just because it’s there doesn’t mean you have to use it.

STUDYING

I was not expecting the leap from A levels to first year to be as huge as it was. All of a sudden there was so much extra reading to do, SO MUCH MORE content (heaps and heaps) and lots of modules to juggle.

Keep on top of your studies. Something I’ve found that really helps you get organised is every day when you come home from uni, write revision cards based on everything you’ve learned that day. This helps you learn it from the beginning but also means you don’t have to waste time at the end of the year writing them all out when exams are fast approaching.

I would also suggest starting your work as early as possible as all kinds of things pop up and conveniently seem to be the same week as a deadline. Don’t let yourself leave it until the last minute as then you have to turn down opportunities because you’re cramming all night, try and get it finished a week before.

In terms of making your work better and more intelligently put together, follow any mark schemes provided by the university but also do all of the extra reading. This will help you to add extra academic sources to your essays/reports and this will make you stand out. It also is great practice for when you have to write a dissertation etc. later on.

HAVE FUN

It might seem scary but enjoy it! University is such a unique and amazing experience. There is a lot to be taken from it, I’ve certainly learned a lot over the past year and a half and I’m sure I will be saying the same thing in my third year. You’re unlikely to be in another environment where so many different people and opportunities surround you again, make the most of it! You don’t have to follow the crowd if you don’t want to, there’s something for everyone and you can do you, whenever and wherever you want!

Find your tribe. Find a great group of people that make you happy and that you can relax and be yourself around. Having friends at university can make such a difference to your experience so the one thing I suggest above all else is to try and put yourself out there and meet people. Push yourself and try new things and if it’s not for you, try something new the next day! The possibilities are endless.

I hope this post gave some of you an insight into what to expect at university. There are endless topics to cover, however, these are the mostย important, in my opinion, as I wish someone had discussed these things with me before I started.

FAVOURITE APPS OF 2017

BLOGMAS DAY 9

So, I have always loved reading blog posts and watching youtube videos where people talk about the apps they love to use. I thought Iย would share something similar with you, as I seem to have accumulated quite the collection of apps on my phone!

VSCO

BeFunky Collage-23

I’ve used this app since I got an iPhone years ago, it’s definitely my favourite. I use it to edit my photos before uploading them to Instagram, as the VSCO allows you to upload straight from the app which is super handy. I also use itย before I put pictures into my blog posts.ย You can upload images straight from your camera roll and edit them using different filters and by adjusting the brightness and exposure etc. VSCO also lets you create a profile within the app, which allows you to upload photos for others in the community to see. You can also see what others have managed to create using the amazing filters that VSCO provides. You can download some ofย the presets for free and you can also buy packs of them which I have done and found to be really worth the money! These filters get permanently added to your collection. It’s such a great app for editing your own work and looking at what others have been able to do with the app. I would definitely recommend this to anyone that enjoys editing photography or being creative in their spare time.

DESIGN HOME

befunky-collage-25.jpg

So this app is technically a game and it is truly the most addictive thing on earth. There’s something so therapeutic about it. The aim is to design the interior of the rooms given to you in challenges, and the higher you score the more rewards you win as a result. You can buy new items for your game that actually exist in the real world, so if something takes your fancy, you can also buy it in real life. There are new releases of furniture in the in-game shop every single day. There’s also the option to view other peoples designs and vote for your favourites to earn some of the in-game currency. It’s a great game for anyone that loves interior design and it never gets old due to its frequent updates and makeovers. The company that created the game, Crowdstar Inc, also have a game that’s extremelyย similar but focuses on fashion, called Covet Fashion, which I also play!

21 BUTTONS21 BUTTONS SCREENSHOTS.jpg

21 buttons is such a unique app, it feels like one of those things you would have described as your dream app a few years ago, but it seemed impossible at the time, but it’s here and it’s brilliant. 21 buttons allows you to view a never-ending feed, full of fashion trends tailored specifically to your taste. You can view other people’s outfits and save them in ‘wishlist’ style folders. You can even share your own outfits, tagging each individual item and wait for it…you can earn money doing so! You earn a small commission every time someone purchases an item that you’ve provided a link for. Great idea, right? You can withdraw the money from your balance every time it reaches ยฃ10, which can add up quicker than you think if you upload frequently. I would love it if you could follow me on 21 Buttons:ย ninalouise

DAY ONE

DAY ONE SCREENSHOT.jpg

The best way to describe Day One is that it’s like a diary. Day by day you can write about what you get up to and add photos. It’s a great way to store loads of memories for a rainy day when you feel like reminiscing. I’ve been using this since summer and it’s so nice to have all my memories in one place. I’m looking forward to spending part of New Year’s Day going back over what I have been up to this year! I would recommend this to anyone that never gets round to using a diary (me) as you’re likely to have your phone on you anyway and it’s quick and easy to do.

TASTY

TASTY SCREENSHOTS.jpg

So I’m sure lots of you are familiar with the super speedy and quirky recipe videos that have been circulating Facebook, however, if you aren’t, this app shall reveal all! Tasty is basically a recipe bank (1700+ recipes) all on your phone, with all of the handy little videos available at one tap of your thumb. The videos demonstrate how to make a delicious meal ingredient by ingredient, which just makes life that little bit easier. You can filter what recipes you’re looking for with options like “weeknight” or “under 30 minutes”! There are literally HUNDREDS of recipes to choose from so you’re bound to find something that suits you and to top it all off, it’s FREE!

FREEPRINTS

FREEPRINTS SCREENSHOTS.jpg

My boyfriend and I started scrapbooking when we got together and we like to print photos out and make pages representing special days or date nights we’ve had so we can look back on a year’s worth of us! I originally used to go to Boots, plug my phone in and print a load of photos out and I would pay the price they were charging as I didn’t know where else I could get photos printed for any cheaper. I ended up paying ยฃ20 for 40 photos! I then found FreePrints and it changed my life. Every month, the app gives you 45 free photos to print out and you only pay for the delivery. If you want or need to print more than 45 photos, you will then be charged based on how many extra prints you pick. You can edit and adjust the photos before they arrive (crop etc) and then you’re done! Just like that and no it’s not too good to be true!

POLYVORE

POLYVORE SCREENSHOTS.jpg

Polyvore is such a great app. It’s still fairly new to me so I’m still figuring bits and bobs out BUT so far so good! You can keep on top of the latest trends in the fashion world, search for specific items that you’re interested in and create sets for other users to find and like. You can share your sets on social media too so others can see your creations! It’s great for getting outfit inspiration too, I really love seeing what other people have come up with. It’s also free!

INFLUENSTER

INFLUENSTER SCREENSHOTS.jpg

Influenster is an app that allows you to review products, read what other people have to say and also, receive some fantastic products from brands. When you create an account, you can connect Influenster to your various social media platforms. The app then calculates how many people you can reach and then brands may or may not see you aa suitable influencer to publicly review their products. It may sound easy but you really have to work hard when reviewing products and making sure you build up a following in order to get noticed. However, the app is great just for finding reviews and checking out the latest products in the beauty community. There’s even a whole community of people reviewing food! There’s something for everyone and of course, it’s free! I would recommend this to bloggers as it’s a great way to review bits and pieces within a huge community.

I would love to know what apps you guys use and love, I’m always looking for something new to try!

ANASTASIA BEVERLY HILLS SUBCULTUREโ€‹ PALETTE {REVIEW & SWATCHES}

BLOGMAS DAY 8

After the huge success of the Anastasia Beverly Hills Modern Renaissance Palette, (take a look at my review) everyone was expecting great things when it’s “sister” the Subculture palette was released. The palette sparked lots of debate within the beauty community. There was lots of discussion surrounding the choice of colours, as they are pretty bold. I managed to convince myself that I can rock shades like this but I can understand why some people were terrified when they saw a mustard yellow.

I decided that I had to try this controversial product for myself and I bought myself the Subculture palette during summer, as I was wearing lots of bold eye looks during these months and thought this palette would be perfect for just that! It retails at ยฃ43 on their website *distant screams from my bank account* The packaging is made from a beautifully soft and a flocked teal coloured, crushed velvet material which definitely makes it feel more expensive, almost identical to the MR palette. There are 14 shades (11 mattes and 2 metallics and 2 duo chromes) A majority of the shades are warm and muted with some retro 70s vibes (YES PLEASE). When looking at the shadows all together, it reminds me of mid-century modern interiors, I LOVE IT. The shades are also quite grungy and autumnal in that there are some mustard yellows and khaki greens with some coppers and golds too.

Processed with VSCO with c3 preset

  • Axis – “Ultra matte sage green” Teal/Turquoise has always been my favourite colour so I was delighted to see this shade in the palette. I love it, it’s an unusual colour and it’s just SO pigmented. I wouldn’t recommend going in too hard with your brush as you might look like you have a black eye (been there, done that unfortunately) If you do anything but tap it lightly, you could probably paint a picture with the amount of shadow you will pick up so be careful!
  • Mercury – “Ultra Matte Slate Grey” I was a bit disappointed when I saw this shade as it just looked so dull compared to the others. However when I swatched it I was pleasantly surprised. It’s a cool toned grey with what I reckon to be lilac undertones (see picture with flash) and it looks super pretty in the crease when blended out.
  • All Star – “Ultra Matte Vintage Wine” I love a good plum coloured eyeshadow. I have green eyes so pinks and purples really make them pop. I love using this in the crease as it’s so pigmented yet blends out so beautifully.
  • Adorn – “Metallic Bronze” This could be my favourite shade. It’s SO pretty and when it catches the light it’s absolutely stunning. It’s so rich in pigment and looks even better when a setting spray is used.
  • Destiny – “Ultra Matte Sage Green” I LOVE this shade, it’s a dark khaki green which is one of my favourite colours. Surprisingly it applies with very little fall out if you’re gentle when you apply it. I love using this in my outer corner for added intensity. I do find if you pack too much on however, it can become quite patchy when blending it out so apply sparingly. I would say that is the case with most dark matte shadows though, it’s all in the blending!
  • Dawn – “Ultra Matte Sand” I actually really like this shade even though it’s pretty simple. It has subtle muted peach undertones which make it a nice shadow to use for a more natural look. I use this as a transition shade most of the time as it blends like a dream.
  • Cube – “Duo Chrome Pink Pearl” My least favourite shade. It’s just not pigmented enough for me. At first I thought it looked gorgeous but upon using it I just got a sort of weak pink sheen. It seems to have a sort of skin on it that means it’s quite chalky too. I would’ve preferred just a plain pearly white shade so I could at least use it for inner corner highlight or on my brown bone.

Processed with VSCO with c3 preset

  • Rowdy“Ultra Matte Blackened Purple” I love using this shade to smoke out different looks, it can change up your makeup 0-100 real quick, from a study session in the library to GET ME TO DA CLUB.
  • EdgeUltra Matte Gold Mustard” I was originally terrified to touch this, I mean, it’s a YELLOW. However, I really enjoy using it now. I love the colour anyway so I just braved it and it’s not too bad! It’s nice to put in the inner part of the lid and it’s easy to blend into a darker shade (I’ve used New Wave to warm it up in the outer corner of the lid)
  • Untamed“Ultra Matte Tarnished Green” This is a smokey green with undertones of turquoise/teal and is lighter than axis but still just as pigmented. SO pretty.
  • New Wave – “Ultra-matte citron orange” I was also kind of scared to use this shadow but it’s truly gorgeous. At first, I thought it was another yellow but it’s actually a warm matte orange shade. I used this lots during summer to create warm toned looks which it was PERFECT for!
  • Fudge“Ultra Matte Warm Bronze” I love using this for smokey eye looks. It adds that extra bit of drama to your lid. It’s a warm brown with red undertones.
  • Electric“Duo Chrome Lime-Gold” This is such a unique shadow. It’s so quirky and looks great on a night out but I actually wear it during the day too. It’s mainly gold however it has gorgeous flecks of green that jump out at you when it catches the light.
  • Roxy“Ultra Matte Muted Coral” I love this shade, it’s such a pretty colour to use as a transition shade in the crease or as a base on your lid. It’s actually a great shade for summer as it’s got some flirty pink/ apricot undertones that really compliment green/blue eyes.

Here are some looks that I’ve managed to create with this palette (apologies in advance, I’m no expert)

Image-1-3

I don’t think there’s a problem with fallout or kick back if you’re gentle with the shadows. I would say all but one of the shades (cube) are nicely pigmented. I would strongly suggest just lightly tapping the shadows as opposed to swirling your brush around the pans as this picks up a small amount of colour that you can blend easily and build up if you want more of a bold look. I would also suggest using a setting spray with the metallic shades in the palette, to make them hella sparkly – the difference is amazing! I wouldn’t recommend this palette to those that enjoy the safety of neutral toned shadows. I would say it’s a palette for the more experimental individuals out there however some shades, for example Electric, Fudge and Adorn could be used to make a really pretty more “natural” look but if there’s only a few shades in here that take your fancy, it’s probably not worth paying the hefty price.

BUY IT HERE

I hope you enjoyed this review and let me know in the comments what you think about this palette or if you’ve found any great dupes!

MY MAC LIPSTICK COLLECTION

BLOGMAS DAY 7

Before I begin, I just want to say a massive thank you for the support you have given me for my last post, it’s been so overwhelming.ย ย I can’t explain how much it meant to me to receive messages and comments from people I’ve known for years and also people I’ve never met saying how much the post helped them or how it had opened their eyes which was exactly my intention. Once again, thank you so so much x

My MAC lipstick collection has grown a fair bit this year and I thought I would share my favourite lippies with you! Arguably, MAC’s lipsticksย are what they are most well known for and that’s how I was drawn in. They usually retail at around the ยฃ15 mark which can be pricey for some so I will also be doing a drugstore favourites post for Blogmas so some more affordable alternatives will be included within that! However, I would really recommend keeping an eye on the MAC sales as they sometimes sell amazing products at reduced prices and they go really quickly!

VELVET TEDDY-2

This is my favourite lipstick. It’s matte and it’s nude – what more could a girl want?! I always say I’m going to wear more red lipstick every year but it never happens, I always drift back towards more neutral tones. I’m not sure when the craze for this shade started but I totally understand why now! Velvet Teddy is a deep-toned beige and is one of the best nude matte lipsticks that I have ever tried. It stays on for hours and dries smoothly without completely drying me out. I wear this pretty much every day.

TESTOSTERONE.jpg

This is one of two darker lipsticks that I wear and I’m not sure you could even call this “dark” actually. I would describe the shade as a warm coral. This lipstick has the most beautiful semi-sheer and almost wet look finish to it which normally I wouldn’t opt for but I’ve really warmed to it! It makes my lips look super smooth and dewy which is great for when I feel like a prune during winter! I was lucky enough to grab this in the Black Friday sale for roughly ยฃ11. It’s unfortunately not available to buy online anymore but they could bring it back, you never know!

MUSCU-LINITY.jpg

I also bought Muscu-linity in the Black Friday sale hence why it looks so shiny and new! It’s a muted beige-brown and because it’s one of MAC’s lustre lipsticks, it has a gorgeous natural sheen to it. Although it’s not as pigmented as some of my other lipsticks, it’s definitely buildable if you want more coverage. It doesn’t stay on as long as a matte lipstick either, however, as it’s not your typical ‘high-maintenance’ colour, it’s easy to quickly top up on when you’re on the go. Unfortunately, this is also not available online.

TAUPE.jpg

This was actually my first MAC lipstick, kindly bought for me by my boyfriend as a gift to cheer me up and that, it certainly did! Taupe is a warm brown shade and it’s in the MAC matte lipstick range. It’s a gorgeous nude that I found to be perfect for autumn. It’s really pigmented and long lasting which I also love if I’m wearing it on a night out.

SPIRIT.jpg

Spirit is a pinky-warm brown with a satin finish. It’s rich in colour and dries semi-matte and still leaves my lips feeling moisturised. I love wearing this colour during the sunnier months for a less intense and more natural look.

MOCHA.jpg

Mocha is a peachy-brown shade and I absolutely love it. It’s probably my second favourite lipstick that I own. The pinky undertones make it a more healthy looking nude shade in the sense that it doesn’t wash me out. I also think that it’s a shade that can be worn all year round as it’s hydrating for Winter and gives a gorgeous dewy look for Summer!

DIVA.jpg

Divaย is a pretty bold choice for me as it is an intense reddish-burgundy. Surprise surprise, it’s another matte lipstick! I originally thought it would make me look washed out, however with a bit of bronzer and blush, I’m good to go. It’s such a great shade for Autumn and Winter.

I’ve always enjoyed being nosey and seeing what other people have in their makeup bags etc or what collections they own so I thought why not try a post of that kind myself?ย I hope you guys enjoyed this post, I’m sure in a years time, I will have added a few more to the collection so another post may be necessary! Let me know what MAC lipsticks you swear by in the comments as I’m always looking for an excuse to get some more!

WHY DECEMBER IS DIFFICULT FOR ME

BLOGMAS DAY 6

Despite the imminence of festivity, December can be the toughest month of the year for some people – it’s not always mince pies and mistletoe. Today, is why I sometimes dread Christmas coming around.

Before I begin, I want to warn you that this is about grief and loss.

My brother Ben was the happiest and most positive person I’ve ever had the pleasure of spending time with. We had lots of happy happy times together, we were inseparable. He was so cheeky and special, life was left pretty boring without him. If you imagine yourself watching the colourful world go by, and all of a sudden a black and white film is cast over everything. That’s the only way I can describe how it felt to lose him. Trying to describe him is too difficult as there aren’t enough words in the world to do it, nor would any be good enough. Unfortunately, Ben died in December which sometimes makes the month quite a difficult time for me. It seemed strange to go through today and post about something trivial when this is such a big part of my life so I hope you don’t mind me telling you about it.

Ben had two disabilities, an unusual combination of Cerebral Palsy and Crohn’s Disease. Two awful disabilities that both had a huge impact on his life. He had good and bad years and during some of the worst, he would be in hospital for long periods of time. 2009 just happened to be one of those bad years. I remember going to bed one night feeling like something wasn’t right and I couldn’t sleep because I was thinking too much. I heard Ben start crying, which was normal to some extent. I went into his room and tried to comfort him and talk to him but he was really poorly. He was vomiting a lot and he kept drifting in and out of consciousness. We all knew something was different this time and I remember my mum was calling people to get advice and explain his symptoms. An ambulance came and paramedics wrote down the details on their gloves. Meanwhile, I packed some things to take with me and I remember stopping to tell my dolls “Ben’s probably not going to come back but I’ll see you soon!”. I guess something had already clicked with me but I was in total denial at the time. My dad and I followed the ambulance to the hospital.

I remember noticing how pale Ben was as they wheeled him into Accident and Emergency. We sat in one of those horribly lit rooms for what felt like hours. I remember being so tired I couldn’t keep my eyes open so Dad found a spare bed for me to sleep in. I can’t remember how I got there, but the next thing I can remember is being sat on a chair by my brother in a children’s ward. He had an oxygen mask on and was surrounded by lots of very concerned looking doctors and nurses. Again, I can’t remember how I got there but I remember next being sat in a family room, playing a video game with another patient there. I remember dad coming to get me and I was then told to go and tell Ben how much I loved him. I talked to him for a while and sung him one of his favourite songs, “Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head”. My nan and grandad came to collect me and I remember they turned up with teddies in the back of the car for me to cuddle on the way home.

When we got there I went round to play at their next-door neighbours as he was a couple of years younger with me and I often went round to see him. I remember passing his mum in the kitchen and casually saying “I don’t think he’s going to make it” and carrying on up the stairs. A little while later, the doorbell rung and my nan had come round to tell me my mum had called and that when I was ready I could go back and call her. I could tell something wasn’tย right just from looking at her face. Obviously, at the time, I had no idea that she already knew, so it must have been incredibly hard for her to act oblivious whilst I sat on her living room floor saying how excited I was for him to come home. The phone rang and my nan asked me to pick it up. I’m assuming for my own sake, my brain has stopped me being able to recall this conversation properly. All I can remember is asking mum when Ben was coming home and she had to tell me he had died a few minutes before. I can remember feeling a huge wave of shock and immense sadness. My nan came and sat me on her lap whilst she spoke to mum on the phone. I could hear my grandad burst into tears in the room next door. Ben had died in hospital and I wasn’t there. This is probably the most painful part for me as I am constantly processing the huge level of regret that I feel. I wish I’d never left him there.

Before I carry on, I need to explain a bit about a place that helped us out massively during all of this, so some background is necessary. My family and I had stayed at Helen House with Ben a few times. Helen House is a place where sick and disabled children can stay at, in order to have a break or a bit of a holiday with the facilities of a hospital, which means that you can get the medical care and one to one attention that you need, at all times. If any of you have been to a hospital, you will know that itโ€™s just not a fun place to be, you might have to wait a long time for a doctor to prescribe pain relief, or you might spend hours waiting to get someone who can help you have a bath or get out of bed and go for a walk, but at Helen House, because there is always  at least one member of staff dedicated to help each child and also to entertain any siblings, at all times, there is no waiting around and lots more fun for everyone, to help them through really difficult times. We will forever be in their debt, as no amount of money we raise will come anywhere near the real cost of what they have provided for my brother and my family. We didnโ€™t have to pay a penny, but the help was there when we needed it.

For my brother, it was really wonderful, because people really focused on making him comfortable and happy and giving him medication whenever he needed it.  I always remember how delighted he was when he went there. He spent quite a lot of time in hospital in the months before he died, but also regularly went to Helen House for special care and he was so much more smiley than in hospital. Being in Helen House made us think far less about the fact that he was dying and far more about the fact that he was really living when he was there, which encouraged us to make the most of the time we had with him. Helen house is a very kind place and the kindness goes on even after a child has died.

A member of staff from Helen House came to the hospital to support my parents and explained that my brother could be taken to Helen House and that a flat would be made available for us all to stay in, while they helped us to make arrangements for his funeral. I was able to use a room in a private part of the house, to sit with Ben and say goodbye in my own time over the next week. This isnโ€™t something that a hospital can offer, as it was comfortable and relaxing without the constant beeping of medical equipment, which as a twelve-year-old kid, was something I really needed to help me come to terms with what had happened, I will always be grateful for this opportunity and for the support that they gave me and my family during that horrible week.

The website for Helen House can be found here.

Incredible work is done by Child Bereavement UK, an organisation, that “supports families and educates professionals when a child of any age dies or is dying, or when a child faces bereavement” and they help thousands of people every year.

I can’t really explain what it means to have lost someone that was such a huge part of my life. I can’t explain what it felt like. Grief is a very individual thing. The part I find the hardest, is telling people how long it’s been. Sometimes people think that the further away the date is, the more likely I am to be “over it” or “okay now” which I can assure you is not the case. That’s probably why I dread each year coming to a close, as it’s a painful reminder that another year has slipped away, pushing us further apart. I worry that people will underestimate how much it hurts, just because it’s been a long time. In my case, it actually hurts more now, I’m just used to living with the pain. It’s become part of who I am.  It’s more of a dull ache rather than a sharp pain and it’s not so strange to have hanging over me like it used to be. Sometimes I see it as a scar – it’s always there and I can see where it hurt, I can see the damage that it’s caused but it’s no longer bleeding.

Understandably, on the 6th December, I used to stay at home and not go to school as I had a glimpse of the bigger picture and missing a day of school was just not important to me on a day like this. Someone I used to know once said “one day she needs to get over it” “what’s she going to do when she’s at work? She can’t just have time off all the time”. (sigh) I’m just glad that these types of people haven’t gone through such a horrible thing, to be able to know what it feels like. Over the years I’ve experienced lots of people concerning themselves over whether some of the things I would say were true, I don’t think any of them took the time to consider why I might be lying. In my case, the truth hurt too much to talk about. For years I lied when people asked if I had siblings or not because I was too embarrassed to tell people what the reality was: I was coming home to a very empty house after Ben had died and I didn’t want people to think I was lonely.  Thankfully, my brother brought lots of people into our lives that acted as family members throughout my childhood, so if we put it in those terms, I technically have a family with over two hundred loving and kind people in it!

I hope this post shows that it’s okay to be unhappy or upset, whatever day it is, no matter where you’re “supposed” to be, regardless of what other people apparently expect of you or are saying. I hope that with this post, lots of you will be reminded that Christmas can be a really tough time for some people, even if they appear to be perfectly fine on social media. Christmas doesn’t have to be “the most wonderful time of the year” for everyone. Don’t feel that you have to force yourself to smile just because everyone around you might be. It’s okay to tell people and talk about it, no matter what time it is.ย You can do what you want with your grief and those that aren’t willing to support that, aren’t worth keeping around.ย Be kind and be nice, as you never know what someone is going through behind closed doors.

Although this is a sad story, I hope some of you have learned a bit more about me, as Ben was and still is a huge part of who I am today.

FAVOURITE CHRISTMAS CANDLES

BLOGMAS DAY 5

You guys seemed to really love my Autumnal candles post, as it proved to be my most viewed! I thought I would follow up with a Winter candles post as this is my favourite time of year to stock up on candles and have cosy days in with flat smelling as festive asย Whoville.

I have already shared my love for DW Home candles and I’m afraid there is only more love to come! I am also including a candle by Sand + Fog, a company that claims to be inspired by “the California coast” who also sell beautifully scented candles around this time of year. Their online shop is still in the making, however, I am able to buy their candles from Homesense or TK Maxx.

This first candle, Christmas Morningย has got to be my favourite candle that they’ve produced so far (which is saying something). It smells of sweet roasted coffee with hints of vanilla. It’s such an incredible smell, it’s perfect for a cosy day in! It’s honestly good enough to eat! The packaging is also gorgeous, which makes it nice to have on display at home.

Tobacco Noir is a candle I actually bought for my boyfriend but seems to have found its way into the living room with the others. DW Home seem to sell this candle all year round. The candle gives off the most amazing combination of smells; vanilla musk and subtle tobacco and topped with tonka beans which adds a scent similar to Woodruff. The Sand and Fog candle is also amazing and smells of white cranberry. I love berry scented candles for Christmas as they’re so festive and warming for Winter!

The sparkling champagne candle is incredible! There seem to be candles everywhere with prosecco or champagne in them for Christmas and I am very happy to comply with this trend! It smells so tangy and sweet, it’s perfect for freshening up the room after some cooking or even before you have friendsย over for drinks. The packaging is so beautiful and sparkly! I definitely will have to find a use for this pot once the candle has disappeared, it’s too pretty to throw away.

Snow Dayย is a beautifully fresh scent, with rich hints of peppermint and spearmint. There’s definitely some Winter berries in there too which makes it another festive must haveย for your candle collection.

CANDLES FINAL PIC.jpg

Peppermint Snow smells like heaven. It has fresh undertones of Eucalyptus and spearmint too which reminds me of candy canes! I love the packaging for this candle too, it looks so adorable, in a kitsch sort of way, which I’m all for. White Christmasย is another super minty and fresh candle. It’s so sparkly and pretty to look at, I love lighting this candle when I have people come over as it always catches their eye and makes the flat smell so delicious!

I can’t believe it’s already Day Five of Blogmas?! I hope you guys enjoyed this post, let me know if you did in the comments as there’s plenty more of where this came from! I’ll be back tomorrow with another post for Blogmas Day 6!

CHRISTMAS IN NOTTINGHAM

BLOGMAS DAY 4

I mentioned in my Halloween post that Nottingham embraces the festivities like there’s no tomorrow. There’s a Winter Wonderland Christmas market every year and I absolutely love it. The market is typically made up of lots of little wooden huts (Santa’s grotto-esque) which sell all kinds of goodies. There’s definitely something for everyone. This year it’s even bigger and better.

So they only went and built the ‘sur-la-piste’ bar, which is basically a double-deckedย (GASP) French ski lodge, which is super cosy and lively if you fancy a drink with some friends or even just somewhere warm to run to when you become a bit too chilly. The bar plays Christmas music all day and then switches to an electric violinist on Friday and Saturday evenings! For the beer lovers amongst you, the bar is the first in Nottingham to serve unpasteurised beer (no added chemicals – pure lager) from oldest distillery in Europe!ย You can grab yourself some mulled wine and kick back and watch the world go by or embarrass everyone you know whilst dancing to an exotic cover of Sam Smith, the choice is yours!

BeFunky Collage-30.jpg

There are interesting foods and gifts to be found all over the place, including a tea shop this year that sells amazing flavours of, (at the risk of blowing your minds) teas – including a “Sweet Vanilla Shortbread”, “Ginger Cranberry” and “Sweet Rosehip Cinnamon”. These are all available to buy here as well. This year there are lots of traders selling award-winning Chutneys, Cheeses and Chocolates which make great stocking fillers! There are fabulous gift stalls filled with handmade jewellery and Christmas decorations and even Lego themed artwork and so much more. There’s nothing quite like giving someone you love something special and handpicked by you with them in mind, of which there is plenty to choose from! There’s also a beautiful stall selling relaxation themed products with lots of mood lights and candles (see below).

In terms of food, there’s a lot to show you. I previously spoke about my beloved chocolate covered marshmallows and here they are once again! They have so many flavours, including Toblerone, Cappucino and Rum & Raisin! You even can grab a box of twelve for ten pounds and give them as a gift, I am obsessed with these!

82BB69D2-4AAA-475E-B490-CC199AF3C95D.jpg

Here’s some more for those of you with a sweet tooth there’s plenty more available! The sweet stalls are probably my favourite as they’re so vibrant and colourful, it’s hard not to stop and stare to take it all in! There’s so much variety! The mini pancakes (below) were AMAZING and opting for a topping of strawberries and Nutella might have been the best choice I’ve made. I don’t think I’ve ever seen so much fudge in my life either, there areย all kinds of flavours, from Skittles to Salted Caramel. It’s worth checking out, even if it’s just for a photo of the mountains of sugary goodness! There are Crepes, Pick ‘n’ Mix, Candy Floss, Toffee Apples, Giant Chocolate Muffins…the list goes on.

BeFunky Collage-31.jpg

BeFunky Collage-32.jpg

Your choices for savoury food are also endless. There are stalls selling delicious traditional British Hot Dogs, Honey Roast Ham served with juicy pineapple, Corn on the Cob, German fried potatoes, Homemade Olives, Stews…and that’s only a fraction of whats available! There are stands dedicated to covering your delicacies in all kinds of sauces, offering a wide range of toppings and side dishes. For those that have not mastered the art of walking and eating simultaneously (me), seated dining is available inside the bar area where lots more foods and drinks are served.

BeFunky Collage-33.jpg

For the children (or those still in touch with their inner child – me again) There are lots of stalls with fairground games where you can win yourself a giant elf or there’s the Helter Skelter that kids can zoom down whilst one of the three bars remains festive and jolly below. Possibly the most popular and certainly the biggest attraction at the market is the ice skating rink, where you can glide around a giant and beautifully lit tree to festive tunes with your friends and family. Although I’m practically like Bambi on ice, it was worth it for the amount we laughed!

The choices are endless and it’s such a special experience, the perfect way to get into the festive spirit and do some Christmas shopping! I would highly recommend checking the Nottingham Winter Wonderland out, especially for those looking for a city break before Christmas. Don’t miss out!
