BLOGMAS DAY 16:
I recently visited Edinburgh with my boyfriend. One thing I didn’t talk about in my post, was the number of homeless people I saw. I felt so helpless, as many of us do, debating as to whether I should give them money or not, uncertain as to how they might spend that money. So how can you know, for sure, where the money is going? One way is to buy some food or water and just hand it to them with a few kind words. In doing this, I have had some amazing conversations with people over a sandwich and a hot chocolate. If you don’t feel this is something you can do, for whatever reason, here’s something you might consider.
StreetLink
There is an app called StreetLink, which “exists to help end rough sleeping”. It enables any member of the public to connect local support services and those who are sleeping on the streets. This is what you need to do. It’s straightforward. It’s easy.
Here’s how it works:
If you pass someone who is sleeping rough in England or Wales and this concerns you, you can send an alert to StreetLink. You can alert the local authority or local outreach service so that they can find the person you have seen and give them the support that they need. All you have to do is say where and when you have seen the person and include some simple details like gender, age, clothing etc. Within 10 days, if you wish, you will receive details of any action taken by the local authority, in response to your alert.
There’s no risk, there’s no commitment, there is no further responsibility on your part. Yes, it’s that easy and the app is free. Doing what I’ve described above will not cost you a penny, but, why not also donate to help this fantastic organisation here.
Why not let this be your Christmas donation this year?
Download it and start helping a homeless person now.
I would find it heartwarming to hear of anything you do, so please do share it in a comment.
Let’s do this together. Let’s make a difference.

Wow this is such an amazing idea! I too never know if I should give homeless people money either. In Glasgow we have a cafe called social bite and you can donate £5 which will buy a homeless person christmas day dinner. I have donated to that and then I know where my money is going! x
Yes! It’s a difficult decision to make especially if you’re in a rush, I think this could be a great solution x
Oh this is awesome. I live in West Wales and even here we have over 500 homeless families and people in just my country alone. Downloading this app now.
It’s awful isn’t it! I hope you are able to use it and help people x
Wow that really is an amazing idea!! I love that there is an app for this, it’s a real problem in our country and that saddens me!
It us terrible that people are homeless. It is so cold and such a lonely place so anything that helps end rough sleeping is an amazing idea x
Yes I agree x
That is a great idea and such a clever app to have! I’ve seen so manny people sleeping on the streets and I really feel for them, I try my best to get them a hot drink as it must be terribly cold x
This is a really fantastic idea. I always feel so sorry for homeless people during the winter. I know, I’ve been there. This app sounds fantastic. I would definitely use it x
I’m glad you agree, it’s heartbreaking x
There are so many homeless people in Cardiff and the situation seems to be getting worse. I hadn’t heard of streetlink before but it’s a great idea.
It’s terrible. I hope you find this app helpful x
I need to check this app out, I hadn’t heard of it before
It’s great! I used it again yesterday x
Oh we usually do this every Christmas! We give some homeless families some unused clothes and relief goods.
Aw that sounds so lovely! I’m sure it makes a huge difference x
